Matthew Burke will not go anywhere at Network 10

I did call Network Ten earlier this afternoon about Matt Burke.

He currently presents 10 News First as a sports anchor in Sydney.

And Matt provides the expert analyst role in Ten’s Rugby Union coverage.

He occupied both positions that began in 2013.

Matt contributed it well to the greater good of Free TV Rugby here in Australia.

He shared the commentary box with Gordon Bray by his side for so long.

It started with the Rugby Championship & Bledisloe Cup Games each year.

The pair also commentated a bit of Sevens rugby seven years ago. That is the Commonwealth Games over in Glasgow, Scotland.

But Ten covered off a monitor from in Melbourne.

They later reprised this time at last year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan.

We remember him as a past Wallaby at the outside center/fullback role.

He also guided the Wallabies with many memories:

  • 1999 Rugby World Cup Champion
  • Tri-Nations & Bledisloe Cup Winner

We are now at a time that Network 10’s contract with rugby will expire shortly.

There are two Wallabies games back to back with Argentina left.

Then the Nine Network/Stan will take over as the exclusive rights holder next year.

Now the question is will Burkey jump ship from Network Ten to the Nine Network?

The answer from their spokesperson is he will stay to anchor the sports news.

He is under contract with this network. So the move will not happen unless Nine can throw the paycheque.

Ten needs and will use him every weekday in a calendar year.

Nine will also want to structure their language of rugby union commentary.

And the likes of Burkey will not be on their radar.

Likely, we will not see Gordon and Scott MacKinnon jump ship to another network.

Nine would want someone to form their nucleus like Drew Mitchell. Benn Robinson & Stephen Hoiles would be a great shout out as well.

And I know Nathan Sharpe briefly worked with Nine for the 2015 Rugby World Cup as a sideline reporter. He may come back considering his age of 42 & fits the new look commentary crew on Nine.

Overall, we enjoyed Burkey commentating on Network Ten for many years.

We praise Him for the contribution he provides with Gordon.

And I wish Burkey all the best with the next two Wallabies games. Plus, his stay at Network Ten with the sports news.

I am sure Sandra Sully will look after him well on the airwaves.
