Australia-Belgium
In the first singles match, Kübler managed to take his first set and break his opponent Bergs. Bergs then got back into the game and managed to win two breaks in the second set to level the match. In the deciding set, Belgian tennis player Bergs led 3-1, but Kübler won five games in a row and defeated Bergs 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The match lasted 1 hour and 54 minutes.
The first Group C doubles match of the Davis Cup in Hamburg saw Australia take on Belgium.
The last time the teams of these two nations met was in 2019 in the Davis Cup finals in Madrid, when the Australian team won with a score of 2-1.
This year, Australia defeated Belgium in the doubles match by a score of 3-0 and went on to top the Davis Cup.
Australia – France
Australian tennis players Matt Ebden and Max Purcell managed to defeat the French duo Nicolas Mahut and Arthur Rinderknech with a score of 6-4 6-4.
Ebden said: “It was a great team effort and great to finish on top.”
Earlier, in the first singles match, France got off to a strong start as Richard Gasquet defeated Australia’s Jason Kubler 6-2 6-4.
Then, in the next singles match, Australian Alex de Minaur defeated Benjamin Bonzi 6-3 1-6 6-4 to level the tie.
Australia – Germany
In the 2022 Davis Cup round-robin tournament, the Australian team failed to defeat Germany as they lost the final doubles match in Hamburg. Although the Australian team is second, Australia will still go to the quarter-finals in November.
“The aim was to qualify here and the boys did extremely well this week,” said Lleyton Hewitt.
“I’m really proud of all the boys and the whole team. They prepared and did whatever it took to get the result we were after and we gave ourselves the chance we came here for. It’s good to get to the accommodation.’
The German duo of Tim Puetz and Kevin Kravitz took the win for Germany. The duo won 6-4 6-4 against Matt Ebden and Purcell.
Australia v Netherlands – 22 November
Team Australia will face the winner of Group D, namely the Netherlands, on November 22. The Australian team managed to beat Belgium and France but unfortunately Germany beat Australia in the end.
With a big draw looming, Hewitt was quickly asked about the availability of Australia’s top-ranked player Nick Kyrgios.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist has not played in Davis Cup since 2019 and declined two call-ups this year.
Hewitt is trying to lure a rejuvenated Kyrgios back into the squad and was quick to praise the players he had at his disposal during the group stages.
“I don’t know – I literally just walked off the court. I’ll try to figure out the best option going forward and give ourselves the best chance,” Hewitt said when asked if Kyrgios would play in the quarterfinals.
“But this week I couldn’t be more proud of the five guys here.
“I’m just excited for them, especially a couple of freshmen in Max (Purcell) and Jason (Kubler).
“For them to go through the experience of playing for Australia and wearing the green and gold, it’s not something you dread. This is a huge milestone in your career and you both did very well.
“I’m extremely proud of all the boys. We gave ourselves a chance. It’s nice to go through the neighborhoods.”
