Round 2 of tonight’s Rugby Championship game between the Wallabies v Springboks at Perth’s Optus Stadium was a huge physical battle under rainy weather. Both sides were neck and neck to begin with where Wallabies got away with a few penalty goals while Boks also scored a few but hold a one-point buffer by 11-12 at half-time. But at the end of the day, the winner belongs to the World Champion Boks team once again who continues to extend their winning share off the back of another few fresh faces off the bench despite fielding a B-team starting line-up by Head Coach Rassie Erasmus.

The final score was 12-30 as the Boks wrap up their two-game Australian tour with a 2-0 clean sweep by 18 points that includes retaining the Nelson Mandela Challenge Plate once again. Boks will now head home as all four teams (All Blacks, Los Pumas, Springboks and Wallabies) will each get a week-long rest next week before they will be back on the road towards the end of this month. The Boks’ next two games will be v All Blacks at home while the Wallabies next two games will be in Argentina v the Pumas.

Please note: you will need a Stan Sport subscription to watch the Wallabies away games including the next two games v Pumas as Nine/9Gem only covers the home games including one when they play in NZ v All Blacks.

One of the world’s best locks continued to shine tonight in Perth for the Boks with no introduction to Eben Etzebeth. He ticks off everything that the Boks need to get on the board that ranges from the experience, leadership and skillset as do understand the big changes Rassie Erasmus did for Game 2. But again, any opposition team will have to get through him first who is really, really tall & at the end of the day, that access has been denied while his Boks has been simply unstoppable with the win all night long.

Malcolm Marx also made a big difference when he came on in the 2nd half as the Boks reserve hooker that safeguarded his country’s two-match clean sweep Australian tour. Like Eben, he too brings a wealth of experience; Although he’s based in Japan though nowadays & can still play for them thanks to the Boks free selection policy. He’s simply outstanding with a mix of throwing and physical power after he scored back-to-back 2nd half tries, especially when playing in the rainy cold weather as Marx is well used to tackling the brave as being tested in the Top League & he’s done that again tonight.

For the Boks, it’s great seeing them play on our turf this year since it’s been a while from the last time they’ve played each other here two years ago. We wish them all the best of luck for the rest of this Rugby Championship tournament.

And how about we give the journeyman and WA local for the Western Force Carlo Tizzano who’s grown so much over these last few years & he’s never let anyone down in his 2nd Wallabies Test at the blindside No.6 position. Building a solid defensive structure is a good start where winning penalties and turnovers were there that led to an okay first half performance. It’s a shame the Wallabies were unable to grasp the way they attack v the World Champs – maybe our backs firepower aren’t as good as them to rattle the Boks at their own end unfortunately.

It was a high scoring game with a huge encouraging performance from the home team as the Western Force has just secured their first win of 2024 v the Queensland Reds at HBF Park in Perth after a winless first couple of games. They were able to get the ball rolling as many as three tries that puts them way in front throughout the first half, although the Reds finally got their first big score not long before half-time as the scoreline was 28-5. Now the Reds again thought they are back on track thanks to another Tate McDemott TRY but then the Force continued to increase their lead over time where they have absolutely dominant all along even though the Reds were able to pick up some late points towards the end, 40-31. After five rounds, the Reds drop to fifth while the Force push the Crusaders to last & now into 11th just behind the Waratahs (10th) by two points.

Hats off to Bayley Kuenzle who was unbelievable on the wing tonight for the Western Force, even though he usually specialises at 10 or on the centre. But again, his Super Rugby experience & physicality is something the opposition couldn’t underestimate where he always keeps on moving as his two TRY performance alongside his excellent defensive work has put the Western Force on the front seat all along for his team’s first win of 2024 – such an excellent team player. There’s another good player with Super Rugby experience who is doing really well back home in Perth also for the Force and his name is Carlo Tizzano who plays on the openside back row at No.7. He is someone the Reds didn’t enjoy every time he locked up the Reds attack in defense whose form was isolated before he and his team made the most out of their quick and electrifying attacking passage of play including two tries for himself. After a winless first couple of rounds, he and Bayley credits the strong home crowd at HBF Park as they will look to give back more good wins from here starting with the Fijian Drua away next Saturday.

And Reds’ No.9 co-skipper Tate McDermott did the best he can to keep up the scoreboard where his team fell short following his own two TRY performance in between half-time. The attacking build-up is there to see where he knows where to find his men on the counter as promised from the beginning, but then a few poor executions allowed the Force to swoop successfully in return where the Reds were vulnerable at their own end before it was too late with little time remaining. The Reds had a great start under Les Kiss (new head coach) until now which wasn’t easy after making the few hours trip to Perth as they will do so again on the way home before another tough test ahead v the high-flying Brumbies at Suncorp Stadium next Saturday.

All applause goes to Mack Hansen on the left wing for the Brumbies. Three tries throughout tonight from the young man.

He is blessed with the support given from the players around him. When the Waratahs unable to get their executions right. As well as the lost penalties against them. Credit from the forwards who formed decent blocks to protect their end.

These guys have given every chance what Mack offered in the final third. Not just the forwards doing their fair share with forming a few phases. You also see his fellow backline playing close to him. There is a couple of hand ups going to complete these conversions. And later on distance themselves from the Tahs by lots of miles.

Like Irae Simone in the centres who has lots of pace like Mack. Irae was given the ball by Nic White. Before he found Mack on the far left side at the right time. With some clean space to help himself unleash that finishing attributes. Goes to show how this squad got the best out of him.

Same as any other attacker who has the set piece assist ability. Especially when Noah Lolesio found Mack earlier on in the 1st 40. And Len Ikitau with the little cut kick to help Mack chase that ball first. He exactly got what he wanted to celebrate a hat-trick try tonight. All due to the Tahs mistakes which in turn became the Brumbies attacking masterclass. With Mack hoping to repeat the same trick every week. Not just for the Brumbies but also potentially for the Wallabies as well.

Caderyn Neville

Another Brumbies star who done well tonight is Caderyn Neville. Where he plays in the second row/lock role at No.5 shirt.

He did a great job having the ball feed right from the throw-ins. Having kept it safe inside to keep the driving maul going straight/square. So Caderyn is focused on pushing through while looking at the Tahs weakness. In which he executed it well with the support needed to move ahead.

Not just joining in the maul as one aspect of his attacking outlet. He can also set up these phases to eat each meter from the Waratahs end. While giving these attackers a chance to unleash their paces in the final third. As well as quick balls that justified the Brumbies big score in the end.

And as usual in the defense alongside his fellow forwards pack. With his tall and physical build a great asset to grasp in both ways. Such as the reading to make the Waratahs lose the ball. When the opposition player or two went so isolated alone. Before Neville able to hold down these blocks physically that help win balls.

Neville in the end is a key player in the Brumbies dressing room. Especially with his vast experience. Where Caderyn can be that example to help these youngsters follow his lead. And having signed a two year extension last year. It looks like he is here to help the Brumbies create more moments. Like the one tonight. As well as many more during his new contract. It includes winning the championship again.

Carlo Tizzano

Very sorry from the Waratahs tonight when they were beaten so easily. But it is between Jack Maddocks or Carlo Tizzano for the best player award alone. The forwards have done the work mostly in defense. Where one of their members got the touchdown in Harry Johnson-Holmes.

But for the majority the Tahs looked lost in the attack. With little hands up to find support needed. So they can at least match the attack that the Brumbies set up tonight. As there is little resemblance from their half that saw a few missed tries here.

I would say Carlo Tizzano over Jack Maddocks. Maddocks may have worked hard with the running alone & can defend on the spot. But he was part of a misfiring backline. Tizzano looked after the forward pack who at least put up a fight v the Brumbies. Just exactly what he did last week v Queensland Reds on his debut.

Roz Kelly asked a great question during the post-game show. When fill-in skipper Alex Newsome trying to give some positives. With Tizzano worked hard all game. He has that physical stature to stuff the Brumbies attack. Alongside the reading on areas where they struggled.

That is one plus given by the new openside flanker. Another part of Tizzano is his attacking contribution. As usual he can dig in the attack with a pack of muscle. In a way to eat the Brumbies territory. Plus the running to get around these passes. But again it is the misfiring backline bar Will Harrison looks out of touch. And Tahs would still be in the fight if their backline was different. In which would see Tizzano form a new cohort of the Tahs blueprint. He has merited this alone. But needs the backline to do something better in order to win games.
