France

It might not be the day today for the All Blacks off the back of their two wins lately v England and Ireland, but it was certainly another good game of Rugby though in this year’s Autumn Nations Series and the French got what they wanted with the home win by a single point in Paris, 30-29.

Yes, the ABs fired off well with two early tries that sets up a seven point lead going into the break (10-17).

But unfortunately, a few injuries including one setback right away after kick-off and also risk averse tactics despite winning penalties backfired so badly – which made more and more difficult to get out of jail in the end v the scrambled French defense.

I’m sure there’s more good days to come between those two teams when the ABs welcome France on their home turf for a three-match tour in July next year, but what they need to do now is finish off the tour on a high v Italy next weekend at Juventus FC’s Allianz Stadium in Torino.

Thomas Ramos – what a performance he’s had at 10 for the mighty French side on home soil at a packed Stade De France in Paris. He has a great creativity collection of Swiss Army Knives that eventually got the home supporters pumping, especially on the counter-attack – like the Roman Baros TRY on debut & that cross kick for Louis Bielle-Biarrey to score one over with pace on the wide left after the ABs stuffed the ball up at the halfway mark. Also, he’s never shy at kicking conversions between the posts, even from long range that was enough to shut them down by just 1 point.

Then here comes the towering second rower 4 in Thibaud Flament who had a stellar performance all night long to protect the French from slipping away v the ABs. He’s bit of like a nightclub bouncer really, who doesn’t give his opponents easy passes to walk in, but he certainly kicked them out to give his French side the points they really need as his defensive strong hold was key to his country’s big win. And yes, the French nightlife went wild even more overnight thanks to their winning efforts v the ABs.

And Tamati Williams was unbelievably powerful with extreme force on the loosehead front row 1 for the ABs, particularly in the 1st half who sets up some amazing tries including winning penalties/scrums along the way. He’s been there and done that many times before including with the Crusaders as sure we will get to see more of his best work going into 2025. It would’ve been better though if the ABs went all in when it comes to winning penalties that would make Tamati even more dangerous to nail down the French for tries but when going for the safe penalty goals, um that didn’t go well.

Gotta say it has been a great finish to the 1st of the three Davis Cup 2024 group stage series matches for the Aussies v France from overnight in Valencia, Spain. Thanasi Kokkinakis got away with a pretty good start when he was simply at the top of his game v Arthur Fils in straight sets, even though this opening singles game wasn’t so easy indeed – 7-6 via 7-4 tiebreak & 7-6 via 7-3 tiebreak. Although in the second singles match, Ugo Humbert was too good for Alexei Popyrin also in straight sets (3-6 & 2-6) which was so unfortunate where Humbert tied with the Aussies at 1-1 apiece for France.

But this tie wasn’t over just yet with the doubles match to settle v the French featuring one of the Paris 2024 men’s double Olympic gold medalist Matt Ebden & one of the new US Open men’s double champ Max Purcell going up against Pierre Hueges Herbert & Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Fortunately, Ebden & Purcell saved the day thanks to our best doubles playing strikeforce as seen regularly across the grand slam tournaments and team group circuit.

They fired off really well where there were some bumps along the way when it comes to the second set but eventually found a way to close out though with the 2-1 series win v France. The final score was 7-5, 5-7 & 6-3 as the Aussies are now onto the 2nd of three series ties in Group B v Czech Republic on Friday morning. Then they will do the best they can possible depending on other results to finish off the group stage weekend on Monday morning v one of the top-ranked sides in Spain.

All they have to do is keep on fighting as another series win would see them one step closer towards locking in that November Finals week spot where the final eight teams will be competing for that one prestigious silverware & no doubt we’d like to have it back this time around after back-to-back recent Final attempts like last year and the year before (in 2022).

Last week, Alpine officially signed our Aussie Jack Doohan as a full-time driver to the replace the Haas-bound Esteban Ocon next season alongside Frenchman Pierre Gasly. But we still don’t know what’s going to happen beyond 2025 when the new engine regulations come in and Renault – who manages Alpine – still wishes to abandon their engine project to cut costs, so they can use Mercedes as one of their privateer teams rather than continue being a fully fledged factory team.

If they really wanted to be a customer team, it’s going to be weird when a big car company like Renault via Alpine makes their own sports cars on the road but not for Formula 1 as if they’re running Lotus or Aston Martin.

I don’t recall a single thing about Alpine working with Mercedes on a road car project before. Although they’ve did work with Caterham and Lotus for a brief time before, but then neither of those joint venture projects came out because there’s less competition to produce and get back in this small sports car market.

What Renault should’ve done is to just sell off Alpine to Andretti if they didn’t really want to run a team that isn’t their own engine. However, we still don’t know when they will finally admit that they can no longer run a Formula 1 team should they become a customer team to Mercedes.

As it stands for now, they are not keen on selling even it’s for a billion dollars when Formula 1 currently enjoys running 10 teams to maximise & protect its financial value rather than thinking anything expansion to let Andretti-GM in.

All we can hope for Renault is to get a supportive OEM partner to help finish off the project like IImor or Mecachrome in the hope of closing their rivals upfront by competing for regular podiums and victories again. If not, they can finish this off by themselves in-house if they really want to for the best of Renault given their long history of racing in Formula One.

That will be a huge ask though as hoping Alpine doesn’t succumb to its complete collapse at some point and Jack would then have to find another ride or at least admit they can’t compete in Formula 1 anymore, and a new team like Andretti or Hitech can come take over Team Enstone where this place was the home to many World Championships back in the 90s and early-mid 00s.

Heartbreak from the host nation France with the silver medal following their 3-1 loss to Spain at Parc Des Princes, especially when they haven’t played in Paris at all until the one and only time now.

So a bit like the Blackcaps really in cricket when they’ve been unbeaten in New Zealand all along until they’ve lost to the Aussies with the World Cup Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground back in 2015.

For France, gotta say the starting goal keeper should’ve done any better to save these shots at his own end – which was disappointing really when Spain got away with 2-3 easy goals. They’ve did the best though possible off the back of their good start including their late charge to unseat Spain for the gold medal honours. But again, their extra time performance was as the same as the keeper’s first half display unfortunately. Not even having less ball on their own defensive end allowed Spain to extend their lead during another half hour’s play in Paris by 5-3.

As said, you gotta feel sorry for the French attackers who did their best to give their home crowd a best possible ending for gold. But Spain holds the cards though as the end of the day for gold since Barcelona 1992, having lost to Brazil last time round four years ago at Tokyo 2020 (in 2021 due to COVID) 2-0 via extra time.

Speaking of Spain, they’ve been unstoppable from 1-0 down to 3-1 going into half-time thanks to a double Fermin Lopez strike. Yes, they may have been held up at the first attempt following a high stakes 3-3 all after 100 minutes of two halves. But again, they are the team who ran the French defenses wild thanks to their expansive attacking play that rattled the opposition keeper all day long when substitute Sergio Camello scored back-to-back late extra time goals — and that is how you finish off a gold medal performance in Olympics soccer for Spain.

Now there’s two more days to go before Paris 2024 is done and dusted with the Closing Ceremony at Stade De France.

Wow!! We thought the host nation France would be out at one stage when the first half was quiet and Egypt got away with the early 2nd half goal. But wait, the 2nd semi-final of the Paris 2024 men’s soccer tournament wasn’t over just yet when France held Egypt back with the 1-1 equaliser at the end of 90 mins normal time. Since it’s a knockout match, the game went into extra time where France not only scored one but two more goals during the extra half-hour that secured them a gold medal match at PSG’s Parc De Princes Stadium in Paris this weekend v Spain. Gotta hail their main man & their main striker who plays for Crystal Palace in Jean-Phillipe Mateta. He scored two brilliant goals where he can do everything that a No.9 requires such as mainly scoring goals as well as beating opposition defenders that kept France’s hopes alive – one for the equaliser late in the 2nd half and another to overtake Egypt for the lead during the 1st extra time period.

Plus, shoutout his national team-mate and now former Crystal Palace club team-mate, having just joined Bayern Munich recently, and his name is Michael Olise over in the No.10 attacking midfield role. Olise also played a huge role earlier this morning with one assist for his former club team-mate Mateta as well as one late goal to safeguard France’s semi-final win over Egypt 3-1. Imagine that lethal partnership of Mateta and Olise if that went on and on going into the new Premier League season had Elise not moved clubs from Crystal Palace to Bayern but no denying the dream of Olise wanting to play for one of the best teams in the world, especially if it’s the Bundesliga in Germany where Bayern have won lots of titles there in the past.

And yes, heartbreak to Egypt who may have got away with the good 2nd half when both teams struggled to find the net early on. But they just couldn’t find a way to get on hold of them through the end, especially when less ball didn’t help that much. Although they can still bow out on a high for the Bronze Medal Match this Friday v another African side via Morocco. France is now set for a homecoming finish to the host city in Paris where they’ve yet to play there so far as let’s see if they can pull this off towards a home gold medal win v Spain this Friday afternoon over there/very early Saturday at 2 AM AEST.

We also had a rematch of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final this time at an Olympics soccer match between France and Argentina at Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

This time, the one and only early header off a corner by Crystal Palace No.9 Jean Phillipe-Mateta was enough to see off Argentina the whole way through for France thanks to a series of Argentinian missed opportunities with the 1-0 win. Now the host nation will take on Egypt on Tuesday morning at 5am AEST whose next opponents got away with the win earlier today v Paraguay via penalties 5-4 when both teams settled the score 1-1 after a long 120 minutes of open time.

Disappointing from Argentina with the loss despite having lots of ball there to try and kick out France of the Men’s Olympic soccer tournament. But then they kept on hitting and missing these shots on goal that gave the French keeper a sigh of relief time and time again, which was unfortunately not good enough at the end of the day following their last 8 exit. They might have made the knockout stages for the first time since their gold medal run back in 2008 in Beijing but they will have to wait four years if Argentina wants it back that could be 20 years since their last Olympics soccer triumph come LA in 2028.

And well done to France on what has been a magnificent win v Argentina on home soil with unfinished business by their head coach Thierry Henry. Love seeing Phillipe-Mateta sprint on time for that header where he’s so lethal in all fronts that a No.9 should do as proven in the Premier League for Crystal Palace. Yes, there’s nothing the French can do when their second goal was ruled out by VAR.  But despite not having much ball opportunities, the French were fortunate enough to escape the Argentinians unscathed with the 1-0 win. Now they’ve yet to have played in Paris so far but it looks like France will need their full support on Monday night over there in Lyon, so they can hopefully finish off a high v the winner of Morocco or Spain.

It was a brilliant contest really where the host nation France and Spain did so well to try and walk away with the win with a few goals each in the bag but both teams had to settle for a draw though after 60 minutes of play 3-3 all that kickstarted Tuesday’s Field Hockey Olympics activities at Stade Yves-Du-Manoir (Pitch 1). France had the early lead with back-to-back goals for a start during the first 15 mins before Spain got one back during the 2nd 15 with a one goal trail ahead of half-time.

From then on, Spain continued their fight by equalising France at the first attempt while the hosts yet found another goal via penalty corner to try and steer clear going into the final 15. Although Spain found another goal once more to level the scoreboard as the clock began to tick down, but again, a draw would be enough that denied the home team the win they badly wanted off the back of their brilliant start to the match. Spain will be back v South Africa later tomorrow/Thursday AM at 3.45 am AEST while France will take a day off before they take on Great Britain on Thursday night at 8.45pm AEST.

As said, love seeing both teams had a really good tussle with the ball on stick both defensively as well on the counter-attack through the break. For Spain, gotta say that less ball earlier on gave the French a really good opportunity to get the ball rolling that found a way to strike through the keeper but good to see them turn around though for the most part that could’ve been theirs to take home with the win had France not scored these two first 15 min goals. Gotta credit to their strong defensive structure as well as the way they attack that held the French their own nerves with more time via the attacking third.

Meanwhile, France pressed well on the counter from the beginning thanks to their dominant 1st half possession and they never gave up by not giving Spain a free pass – such as these winning penalties and intercepts through the middle to try and give the home crowd a really good chance to close the match for the win. Now their defense was okay but it’s just a shame that some ill-discipline/lost penalties have slipped away really where Spain had a good sniff at them that led to goals against the host nation where France should’ve done better to shut them down before they had to settle for a draw.

The Olympics is not just about incredible athletic achievements; it’s also a celebration of global cultures, bringing people together through shared experiences.

As we gear up for the Paris 2024 Olympics (which are on from July 26 to August 11, 2024), if you weren’t able to go to Paris to watch the games, what better way to enjoy the events than by hosting a watch party at home with delicious homemade meals?

Here are five easy recipes that will inspire your Olympic spirit and satisfy your taste buds, all from the comfort of your home.

Chicken Empanadas – Argentina

Do you support Team Argentina or Team Chile? Prepare a batch of empanadas, the national dish of both nations. Empanadas can be made in a variety of forms and with various fillings. This version has soft chicken thighs, peppers, olives, tomato paste, and paprika to boost the flavors. If you’d rather have ground beef, you can use that instead.

Mac and Cheese – America

A classic comfort food in American cuisine, mac & cheese is loved by both adults and children for its creamy texture and delicious cheesiness. This classic dish consists of cooked macaroni pasta coated in a creamy cheese sauce, made with a variety of cheeses such as Parmesan, mozzarella, and cheddar. It makes for a hearty and delicious dinner.

Greek Chicken Chili – Greek

This Greek-inspired chili is the perfect dinner for serving a crowd at an Olympics watch party, as it is both filling and light. It is made up of tender dark meat chicken, creamy white beans, and tender vegetables. The stew is flavored with a bouquet of hearty herbs and can be easily prepared in a single pot, resulting in minimal mess and maximum flavor.

Quesadilla – Mexican

The quesadilla is a popular Mexican dish made with a maize tortilla toasted on a griddle, stuffed with cheese and other contents (meat, veggies), and folded over for eating. A perfect game-day recipe!

Panzanella – Italy

Panzanella is an Italian salad, prepared from soaked stale bread, along with tomatoes, onions, basil, and an olive oil and vinegar dressing. This is a typical summertime Tuscan salad that is made using seasonal, fresh summer veggies.

Other ingredients, including cheese, cucumbers, and olives, can occasionally be added to Panzanella. Panzanella is thought to have been created out of necessity as a way to use undesired ingredients, such as stale bread.

The dish’s name is a combination of the terms pane, which means bread, and zanella, which means soup bowl.

Kibbeh – Lebanon/ Syria

These delectable kibbehs, a national dish in both Lebanon and Syria, can be served as a main course with rice or as an easy starter at the Olympics cocktail party. The grated onions make the kebab juicy, while the use of different spices brings a surprising flavor profile that seasoned meat to perfection.

What a day it has been this morning through the first of the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship Quarter-Finals that went through the very end across Germany where the hosts were beaten by Spain 2-1 in Stuggart even though they’ve kept the game going for a bit longer while France defeated Portugal via penalties in Hamburg when no score was settled for both sides through 90 mins of normal time and 30 mins of extra time. Now that the first semi-final match is set to go on Wednesday morning between Spain v France, all eyes on 2021 runner-up England if they can get the job done tomorrow morning v Switzerland with a hint of a formation change by going with a back three defensive strategy before we will find out soon enough whether or not if Turkey’s fairy tale run will continue going into the semis at the same time v the Netherlands,

Heartbreak from the hosts who did the best they can to keep the match going having responded well to Spain’s 2nd half lead with a few attempts to try and get the job done towards goal. Yes, great to see Bayer Lekekusen forward Florian Wirtz who gave his country a lifeline off a clean strike through the middle – having his side held back Spain’s early celebration a bit longer ahead of extra time. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t the match they wanted to finish off when the keeper should’ve saved that header which turned out to be Spain’s 2nd goal as it could’ve gone onto penalties to try & boot Spain out of the tournament. Then another series of hit and misses in the last few minutes despite being given three minutes more than the added 2nd extra time period have clearly summed up their disappointment from the last eight on home soil as the next time Germany will seek their next European crown will be 2028 in the UK/Ireland – 32 years from their one & only title back in 1996.

Meanwhile, Spain did so well to put themselves ahead straight after half-time through a brilliant straight line strike off Dani Olmo when the first half didn’t go their way when it comes to the possession. They had a few scares at times every time the Germans tried to get the job done like that poor goal kick before Wirtz at least levelled the scoreboard that led to another 30 minutes of play at extra time. But they’re glad to wrap up the game with a huge sigh of relief thanks to a brilliant header by Mikel Merino when the opposition keeper hesitated to save the ball before it led to the Spaniards regaining the lead for their 2nd goal just in time for his side’s own keeper to stop Germany from slipping away towards the very final full-time whistle at the 126th minute. Now they will be in the semis yet again in the hope of advancing into the Final since 2012 when they did well last time out v Italy in Ukraine & if Spain can go all the way, then this could be their record 4th title in the Euros history.

Looking at the other Quarter-Final match, France were relieved to get away with Portgual’s endless shooting attempts with some excellent saves alongside the solid defensive work they’ve put in that didn’t make it into goal all night long whereas Portugal would be very frustrated on what has been a painful end to the tournament following a scoreless first 120 mins that could’ve been their night like scoring 2-3 goals to wrap up early instead of walking away empty handed. Yes, France might not have found the opportunities they desired up front off the back of a strong Portugal ball. But they did however win this game via penalties when a mis-timed Joao Felix penalty shootout attempt went their way through the woodwork before Theo Hernandez scored the 5th and final winning penalty goal that sent France into the semis now v Spain. It looks like France has made Portugal pay when they broke their hearts back in the 2016 Final on home soil 1-0 at Stade De France as Portugal’s poor hit and misses ultimately gave them the exit boot while France is chasing their 3rd Euros crown in 25 years now since 2000.

Like the previous match of the afternoon at Rod Laver Arena, we also witnessed another easy match over in the men’s draw during the fourth round between reigning champion Novak Djokovic & 20th seed Adrian Mannarino from France. The first two sets all belongs to Djokovic unchallenged and although Mannarino finally got the ball rolling but still the match belongs to him in straight sets (6-0, 6-0 & 6-3). He will now be watching the 2nd afternoon match of the day where American Taylor Fritz & last year’s finalist opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece) are currently battling it out to try & book a spot with him for the last eight at John Cain Arena.

Well, that was tough but he did bring some smiles and laughter to the crowd after Mannarino was easily eliminated just outside the last eight for the second time at Melbourne Park. The last time he was here was two years ago where the Frenchman was defeated by Rafa Nadal despite an intense first set via the tiebreak  14-16. Yes, he just wasn’t at the races today where Mannarino made some small games this late in this match. However, he had a great run beforehand who overcame a series of five-set showdowns including 16th seed American & also rising star Ben Shelton. He’s currently the best men’s ranked player in his country with still some energy left in the tank at age 35 as let’s hope his next run here will be a QF.

Meanwhile, things ain’t so hard today from the reigning AO champion where he got the job done as quickly on what has been an unusual daytime outime despite the roof being closed as he can in 1 hour and 44 minutes. As said, he was simply too good and unplayable all along without a lot of fuss from start to finish. Now he’s open for another challenge who can push him all the way like 1st round opponent Croatian Dino Prozmic did to him at the tiebreak during the 2nd set before the Serbian responded well towards the end there. That remains to be if it’s going to be Tsitsipas again who is eager to face him again following the last year’s final. If not after another easy run, then there’s always Daniil Medvedev or the new rising Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz on the road towards next Sunday’s main event here.
