Brumbies has just topped the Super Rugby table ahead of the two best NZ teams in this competition Chiefs and Crusaders thanks to their win against the other best team in Australia – Queensland Reds.

Both teams fought hard where they had to share the lead going into the break by 7-7 all but all of the other 40 towards the finish belongs to Brumbies hands down.

The way Reds slip up from ill-discipline to being willy nilly when trying to convert their attack into points allowed Brumbies to snatch the next few tries and that was something the Reds weren’t able to do by 24-14.

We also had a women’s test match as part of the Pacific Four series at the same GIO Stadium in Canberra with the Wallaroos and USA Eagles. USA weren’t bad other than some poorly timed errors with Hope Rogers cashing in a hat-trick of tries past the in-goal. However, expansive & positive rugby from the Wallaroos elevated them to the front row in cruise control by 27-19.

Top 3 players from Brumbies v Reds and Wallaroos v USA

Glad to hear that Tom “Tommy Turbo” Wright turbocharged his Brumbies attack where running rugby was in play on the front foot especially in the 2nd half. With Joe Schmidt watching on-site once again, here’s hoping Ryan Lonergan gets his chance to take on the Lions – he can do a bit of everything off the expansive and can also provide some handy kicking extras.

Reds, meanwhile, good in defense but not so much putting things together at times in attack, with Fraser McReight continuing to put in those hard yards. A good Finals run would surely help Joe choose Fraser over Tizzano with competition heating up for the Wallabies starting open No.7 shirt.

IMG 93742

Going back earlier with the Wallaroos v USA, Ash Marsters also on the 7 continues to be at her best like it was off the bench v Black Ferns last week + Charlotte Caslick with her pace and little cross kicks gave us every reason why she wants to play at the World Cup later this year in England.

And on the Eagles, Hope Rogers’ hat-trick of tries at loosehead 1 lights up their confidence along the way. Bummer they made the wrong calls where Wallaroos took great care of the ball than USA, that’s all I can say & also shoutout to IIona Maher who has been everywhere from helping USA achieve Olympic bronze in the 7s last year in Paris to ABC’s DWTS.

It’s been a while but a NZ team has finally tasted victory on Aussie soil for the first time in 2025 after 11 rounds with five to go before Finals time with thanks to the Hurricanes who got away with the win over the ACT Brumbies in Canberra 35-29.

Both had their moments and struggles too along the way but again, Hurricanes have the upper hand this time where they got some good players coming back along with a functional attacking backline – particularly the starting left & right wingers where tries were made there.

For Brumbies, they’re still sitting 3rd behind the winning weekend teams Chiefs and Crusaders on the ladder which is good news. Chiefs won early last night v Force who were too good and so does the Crusaders earlier tonight v Highlanders.

IMG 48302

But it’s going to be tough road from here when Brumbies will take on Dan McKellar’s Waratahs as the home side now back here at GIO Stadium next Saturday under the lights and they’ve lost the previous one last time in Moore Park.

The Race for Top 6 Finals: First four seems certain with 4-5 teams fighting so hard for places five and six

At least the road for the Top 6 is gonna be extremely tight especially the last two spots and you’ve got four if not five teams gunning for it before it closes after Week 16 and then the second lot of rides go from there with the lucky loser for semis.

Safe bets would be the Western Force and Waratahs over Hurricanes.

Then you’ve got Moana Pasifika also back on track at the right time thanks to Ardie Savea’s return to selection following their Pacific derby afternoon win over the 11th-placed Fijian Drua by 34-15.

IMG 48292

Meanwhile, defending champions Blues?

Still a possibility who have the still flying Force next up at Eden Park on Friday after they were battered and bruised by the Reds last night.

And safe to say not so much for Highlanders unfortunately looking at their remaining matches of 2025.

Top players to watch tonight

Looks like we’ve got a World Heavyweight Championship contender Super Rugby version v ten others for that one prestigious belt representing the Hurricanes – Kini Naholo, brilliant stuff with two tries tonight on the left 11.

Xavier Numia made a big difference when he helped the Canes increase their lead on the reserve front row and great to see Billy Proctor back with a bang at 13.

IMG 51462

Still more work to do but hey, Canes now back in Top 6 firing all cylinders from the wings as the first team to win on Aussie shores this season.

Brumbies, meanwhile, couldn’t do much defensively while they’ve lacked ball (should’ve gone all-in expansive) other than some quick plays and solid late momentum.

Nick Frost gave them a fighting chance (second row 4) where Brumbies could’ve done any better had the Canes continued to slip up more often like last Saturday v Force – bonus point better than nothing.

Week 2 of 16 in the 2025 Super Rugby Season capped off with another Western Force win this time away from home against the regular semi finalists ACT Brumbies team in Canberra’s GIO Stadium. Force fired off with a string of early tries despite their rash decisions going into half-time by 14-28 while Brumbies found themselves back on track at last to play catch-up as it goes on.

Even though the Force were in trouble again discipline wise with 14 or even 13 men with 15 minutes to go, it’s not doom and gloom though where Force regained the lead whenever they had the ball – and that allowed them to finish off in style by a mere three point difference, it’s 42-45.

Elsewhere, the Crusaders were harshly beaten last night by the runner-up Chiefs and so does the current champs Blues at the hands of Highlanders in Dunedin earlier this evening. But the best part about this weekend is that Australian Rugby is still on a roll so far in 2025 thanks to an all-Aussie top-seed Brumbies upset by the Force followed by a statement Queensland Reds win v Moana Pasifika also from last night in Brisbane.

IMG 716011

Top 3 players report card

As said, congrats to the Western Force with their close win once again – they’ve got a fantastic group of players along with Kiwi Head Coach Simon Cron who knows how to give back with their own swagger of Running Rugby.

Guys like Darcy Swain on the second row at 5 do mean business having taken a huge leap of faith from Canberra to Perth and yet he did not disappoint at all in the way he breaks down thanks to the Force’s unreal start to the game while they continued to add more points as it goes despite their ill-discipline & yellow cards.

IMG 713211

The same goes to Dylan Pietch on the left wing despite picking up a yellow at one stage earlier on but his work rate though shouldn’t be underestimated thanks to his undeniable pace that got the best out of Dylan both in attack & defense and it’s clear he wants more of this often as long as the Magic comes to him – you never know & he will fill you in with surprises.

And Charlie Cale never backs down with his No.8 Brumbies shirt on his sleeve such as his two-TRY haul in between two halves who unpacks excellent physical grit through his head planted down low. It’s just a shame their poor starts and decision making forced the Force’s hand as one big mistake under pressure can turn out costly & that was the name of the game tonight.

The 4th and last Quarter-Final Super Rugby match of 2024 stops at GIO Stadium in Canberra as the 3rd placed ACT Brumbies welcome back the 6th placed Highlanders from Dunedin after being forced to sit outside the Top 8 last year for the first time since 2022. The first half was tight with the Highlanders benefiting the winning penalties such as two penalty conversions plus the one TRY but it was the Brumbies that controlled the pitch where they went into the break with a one-point buffer, 17-16.

In the end though, it’s all about the Brumbies who continued to extend their lead with another two tries – despite seeing another physical battle with Highlanders unable to get over the line even with the ball on hand before time ticks away against them towards full-time. The final score was Brumbies 32-16 Highlanders as the home fans will now book their flights by following their team with pride and optimism to Eden Park in Auckland v the Blues that will take place on Friday night this time around at 5pm during the early evening here. If you’re used to watching on 9Gem during Saturday nights, make sure you tune in 24 hours earlier for this special one in case you miss out. Before this game, Blues wrapped things up very easily at home turf 36-5 when they continued to shine their all-round attack while the Fijian Drua walked away with just the one TRY.

One of the best Brumbies players on song off the wide right is Andy Muirhead following his outstanding Quarter-Finals performance v the Highlanders. What would life be like had he played for the Wallabies? Surprised it still hasn’t happened despite being 30 (hoping Joe Schmidt will consider him) where he unpacked so many tricks out of the bag thanks to the dominant possession. All he wanted is for the ball to come to him and that came at the right time when the Brumbies needed to go out wide and he’s your man to wrap things up like a gift present – just unbelievable as always. If one isn’t enough, Charlie Cale is the next best thing on the Brumbies 8 back row at age 23 – who not only was good defensively but also really impressive with his physical grit – that helped crack the walls past the Highlanders. He’s excellent at scrummage and maul time including at the ruck to dig it in while being an excellent support player with his mobility where tries were made possible for the Brumbies. He left the pitch after 50 odd mins in a very good position off the back of a good restart straight after half-time.

Now it’s up for the Brumbies to go one better for the Grand Final by going up against 2nd-placed Blues in Eden Park on Friday night. They’ve fallen short including the last semis encounter there when Super Rugby came back to normal two years ago as winning the trophy would mean anything & everything to both the Canberra-based team, the Wallabies & Rugby Australia.

And Highlanders No.10 Cam Millar was really good off his kicking tee in all areas that gave his team an early headstart thanks to the winning penalties & early Brumbies handling errors. Gotta credit the scrambled defense & the scrummaging where the Highlanders were able to pick up some positives against the No.1 Australian Super Rugby team like that restart later during the 1st half, having closed it out so quickly off the left by Jona Nareki. But their Finals comeback after finishing 6th has unfortunately came to an end after they were just unable to grasp their attack for the most part, especially with low possession while couldn’t get the job done from one point down in the last 40. There is still a long way to go which is a far cry when they used to be oh so good like a decade go but the Highlanders are getting there & hopefully be Top 4 by 2025-2026.

Week 7 of the 2024 Super Rugby Season wrapped up with the ACT-NSW rivalry between the Brumbies and Waratahs at GIO Stadium in Canberra where it was a quiet and defensive focused first-half with the Brumbies holding a 10-point lead after a series of penalty goals by the two teams but No.9 Harrison Goddard has got Canberrans on the board right at half-time with his first TRY of the night, 16-6. Then the Brumbies went on to build on their good first-half with an excellent 2nd-half performance of a few tries on the board that sums up their 5th straight win of 2024 while the Waratahs might have secured the one and only TRY but struggled mightily despite their good defensive structure earlier on as the full-time score was 40-16.

It’s a hard pick with so many Brumbies players performing at their best tonight v Waratahs but how good was Corey Toole who was so electrifying that made the most of his team’s unbelievable 2nd half counter-attacking performance on the left wing at No.11. It’s not just his explosive finishing and slick passes that puts Toole on the front foot but he can also cover everything in between including defense as he deseves the step up into Wallabies level soon enough. Then shoutout to James Slipper who plays on the front row at loosehead for the Brumbies after he just became the most capped Australian Super Rugby player of 178 caps & he too had a great game to keep a great eye of the Waratahs earlier on while giving his team winning penalties and big scores to help the Brumbies stay ahead. He’s so important on and off the field with a plethora of experience alongside a high standard of physical and mental toughness required both at Super Rugby and Wallabies level as credit to him on turning the Brumbies into a regular finals contender since he came over from the Reds back in 2019. Now look out Blues and Hurricanes, they are gunning for the top spot now & hopefully the Super Rugby trophy later in June. But first, they got the week-long off for next week before the Brumbies head to Auckland v Blues on a Saturday night for Week 9.

And Charlie Gamble did the best he can to hold the Waratahs glue together on the openside back row at No.7 with excellent defensive contribution to turn the game over including some attacking intent which reaped rewards along the way, especially when going up against an outstanding Brumbies team who controlled really well with possession. It’s just a shame that his team’s attack wasn’t on par with the Brumbies backline in the 2nd half when it comes to the lead, having built some defensive stability throughout the opening 40. Once again, the Waratahs still haven’t won in a while that goes back to Round 2 last month v Crusaders whom they will be facing up next this time at home (Allianz Stadium in Moore Park) on Friday night.

Irae Simone was one of the outstanding players for the Brumbies tonight in the No.12 shirt at Inside Centre. He created so many headaches to the other opposition end off the back of the Canes’ lost penalties and poor defense. That way, his work can be easy done where not only he collected a TRY in the 1st half but he also backed up as a support/cover player every time Simone checks in going forward to make sure the Brumbies are in the right track, as well unpack his finishing touches. And he too also limit the Canes’ opportunities with the ball in his tracks defensively. All in all, he’s the complete package in the midfield where Simone never stops running back and forth all night long.

Next up is fellow Brumby Lachlan Lonergan who replaced Folau Faingaa in the 56th minute, where he played a really big role of his team’s 2nd-half comeback in front of their home supporters at GIO Stadium. His throw-ins looked excellent as always, as well as a brilliant read on defense that derailed the Canes’ 2nd-half performance. It gave his side a chance to take advantage of the opposition team’s errors when Longergan was tested in attack, before he handed over the keys to over his support men & they made his life easier as the Brumbies were well and truly safe within the winner’s’ circle.

And Joshua Moorby rounds off the Top 3 when he was excellent at full-back in the first-half for the Hurricanes. He credits the team’s excellent start with the talk-up there, especially when the ball came to him before he unleashed himself past the TRY line twice that gave the Canes’ a small lead at the half-time break. But they just couldn’t keep the momentum when a few mistakes and lost penalties via ill-discipline let him down with limited attacking opportunities that preclude them from staying ahead; the pressure then spread to his forwards where it was too hard to stop a threatening Brumbies attack while the clock ticked against them before it’s too late later in the 2nd-half.

We wrap the first week of the 2022 Super Rugby Playoffs with the fourth and last Quarter-Final tie between the ACT Brumbies and Hurricanes here at GIO Stadium in Canberra.

It was a crash and bash Opening 40 where both teams experienced a mix of infringements with Len Ikitau being sent off under a red card that gave a huge blow for the Brumbies, while Owen Franks had to sit ten minutes in the naughty chair when it comes to the Hurricanes camp.

img 9615

Nonetheless, it’s the Hurricanes who has the lead at half-time, 15-22 – Having made an excellent start courtesy of Joshua Moorby’s double TRY before the Brumbies began to make up some lost time & fought back with also both tries of their own.

But the winning team that came on top is the Brumbies as they took their semi-final spot next Saturday v Blues for a shot towards a Chiefs or Crusaders Final at Eden Park in Auckland, NZ. They were eight points down at one point with 30 minutes to go before they took advantage of the Canes’ poor throw-ins and lost penalties that came back to bite them in return, courtesy of two Toms in Tom Banks & Tom Wright.

img 9627

The final score here at GIO Stadium is Brumbies 35-25 Hurricanes.

Hurricanes was be gutted to be thrown out of the Final 8 by the best Australian Super Rugby team right now and not complete an all New Zealand Final 4 showdown. They got the ball rolling with two early tries & a couple of three-point penalty goals that gave them the advantage to build a lead and try to stay ahead. However, mistakes have been plugging through square pegs in a round hole where poor line-outs & continued lost penalties not only robbed their finishing opportunities with the ball, but it also spread to their defense where the Canes’ just let that slip away against a resurgent Brumbies attack.

img 9603

And the only Australian Super Rugby team standing into the Final 4 belongs to the ACT Brumbies. They had to play 14 men for a while without Len Ikitau after his unfortunate red card earlier in the 1st half over a dangerous tackle on Aiden Morgan’s jaw. But not hope is all lost when the Canes also experienced some disciplinary issues that helped the Brumbies fought back with a seven-point trail at the break. Then a couple of fresh faces off the bench benefitted one way while they took advantage of the Canes’ missed opportunities going forward, as the Brumbies ultimately came out on top as the winning team.

Now the Brumbies on the cusp towards another Super Rugby Final where these supporters will be right behind them through every step of the way, whether they’re tuning in from home on Stan Sport/9Gem or travelling to Eden Park in Auckland by their side.

It was a very close and low-scoring game last night at GIO Stadium in Canberra, where we saw the best of both Super Rugby teams in action from both Australia & New Zealand; ACT Brumbies v Blues from Auckland. The home team fired off well with the early lead before Blues fought back with a one-point buffer at half-time, 7-8. Both teams never game up later on where the Brumbies re-gained the lead with a minute to spare. Unfortunately, the Brumbies just couldn’t holf off towards the finish line, when they were hijacked by Beauden Barrett’s sensational drop-goal that secured his Blues side the win they truly deserve away from home. The final score is 19-21.

Unlucky from the Brumbies with the heartbreaking loss which left their home supporters frustrated. The home side started off well alongside a strong defensive shape where their opponents have trouble getting past them at times throughout tonight. However, they were punished with two yellow cards in the first-half which was one part being let down, while the Blues swooped a last-minute lead change towards half-time. Then there’s a lack of fire from the backline, where their limited contribution going forward have also let the home team down. It’s a high standard the Brumbies just couldn’t match with the Blues, which puts so much pressure defensively before Beauden Barrett struck them a huge blow in the end.

IMG 7461 1 1

Congratulations to the Blues with an unbelievable win v the top-ranked Australian Super Rugby team, ACT Brumbies. Now they may have been behind in some areas, especially with the slow starts & poor defensive responses along the way. But they’re always excellent in the attack that scared off the Brumbies where the Blues bide their time patiently, especially with a number of winning penalties/advantages before they were able to get the job done. And the Blues just never gave up based on their best strengths & style of play, which also helped inspire them to close this match-up with the win via Beauden Barrett’s drop-goal.

We now have one game left this afternoon to round off Week 14 when the Highlanders welcome NSW Waratahs at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand. Then we finish off the regular season next weekend before finals time; Brumbies travel to Auckland v Moana Pasifika next Saturday Night, while Blues head to Leichhardt Oval in Sydney v Waratahs at the same time.

We have to say that Scott Barrett made his Crusaders a lot easier to execute tonight on the second row. He can unpack everything from attack to defense where he runs back and forth, as well as smash his way through the Brumbies defensive half. It just goes to show that Scott knows where to hold the opposition areas accountable before he sends the message over to his team-mates & help them back up, so they can find that TRY line & grab these five-pointers every time through the gate. And his contribution tonight exactly shows why he’s not an easy player to face against any opposing team, when the Brumbies just couldn’t find a way to escape past the men from Canterbury.

Another Crusaders standout player tonight at GIO Stadium in Canberra is Bryn Hall, who plays the No.9 scrum-half position. He struck a brilliant balance between communication and designing the attack, so Hall can make the best of his physicality in two ways; bring his Numbers in to finish off the work for him or help him know where to plant that TRY line. It’s a two-way street where his Crusaders team were just simply firing on all cylinders, with Hall worked really hard for the majority before he deserved an early mark by the time the Saders were well safe towards winning in the 66th minute.

And Irae Simone played really well at inside centre for the Brumbies in the No.12 jersey with two tries tonight. He’s proven to be a dangerous figure against the Crusaders defense where Simone is a very good communicatior, especially when he reaches out for help from scrum-half Nic White, before he unleashes his finishing touches with the pace that earned the Brumbies valuable five-pointers. And Simone continued to flex his attacking prowess by covering up his support runners that helped the Brumbies make up lost time later in the 2nd half. But it just wasn’t his night when the team’s poor first 40 left them little time to upsurp the Crusaders, despite the early lead.

It’s the best of the best Super Rugby teams across both countries match-up between the Crusaders & Brumbies here at GIO Stadium in Canberra. Brumbies may have opened the account early but the Crusaders held them comfortably throughout the first half, 5-23. Now the home side’s strength with the fire offs helped them rebound later on, but the Brumbies just left it too late as the Crusaders continued to stay ahead with the win at 26-37.

Brumbies fired off well with the early lead but then they struggled to stay ahead, when the failure to clear out via the kicking threw so much pressure to their defensive half. Although, they began to bounce back later with three tries scored in the 2nd half. However, they were well behind by that stage while the Crusaders extend their winning margin before it’s too late. It would’ve been a super close contest if Noah Lolesio and Rob Valetini weren’t injured, where the Brumbies functioned at times without them. But unfortunately, their winning run came to an end as they will need to focus on their weaknesses, before preparing for next week’s round v Blues from Auckland on Saturday night at home.

IMG 6637 1 1

And Crusaders are outstanding as always where they just completed their three-week Australian tour on a high note v the current top-ranked Australian Super Rugby team here. They’re good at bouncing back, as well as spotting the Brumbies’ lack of kicking clearance in the first half. They took their time wisely with the ball before they simply run the Brumbies defensive blocks ragged with a mix of pace & gaps spotted down low that led to a comfortable half-time lead, followed by an easy 2nd-half spell with the win. They’re now set for a fantastic end to the regular campaign at home in Christchurch with the Drua next Friday and the Reds in two weeks time; they’re also relying on the other results that will go their way as well before Playoffs time.
