Jack Bowen

After 80 minutes of Shute Shield Grand Final rugby of 2024, we saw another new winner since Randwick lost the Week 2 Finals last weekend. But today’s moment was all about the Eastern Suburbs who just ended their long 55-year drought since 1969 over the Northern Suburbs by one point, 36-35.

To begin with, Norths had some close battles earlier on when they led for a bit at one stage but Easts dominated most of the first half pie by 16 points, 29-13.

Now Norths began to play catch-up while Easts able to extend their lead a bit further on the scoreboard as this 20-30 min grand final came down to a close two-horse race towards the final front stretch where one will win & another will have to watch on with disappointment at the finish line.

In the end, that unfortunate last-minute TRY attempt by Norths was ruled as knocked-on by the ref when they were one point shy off the lead sums up this season-ending match, with Easts finally able to taste grand final winning glory for the first time in a very long time.

Congrats with the win by the way to Easts where they’ve got excellent players with some of their brilliant youngsters on the books at the Tahs while Norths came from a long way who knows what it takes to succeed in Finals footy from 6th spot.

Easts No.10’s Jack Bowen had a whirlwind 2024 from overseeing the Easts’ unbeaten campaign including today’s long-awaited Grand Final triumph to making some Super Rugby appearances for the NSW Waratahs. Gotta say he demonstrated excellent creativity that is paramount to the Easts’ counter-attack where you got some excellent wide players and forwards around him through the gate. We’ve that before when he was earning his stripes and like Teddy Wilson, he came back as a better player – more to come as the Tahs future 1st choice No.10.

Here’s another standout Easts player that you need to know and it’s Jamie Adamson from England who also put in a championship-winning display on the blindside No.6. Yes, he’s plying his trade here normally for work on weekdays but glad he brings top level World 7s experience from both England and Team GB to Easts that benefitted his team-mates & some juniors coming through the ranks. He was simply destructive with his towering height and physical skillsets both in attack and defense where Jamie nailed it right there to help steer his Easts clear off Norths.

And Norths outside midfield 13 Henry O’Donnell did the best he can to try and crack the code once again on what has been his second straight Shute Shield grand final at the same Leichhardt Oval venue. There’s a reason or two why Western Force wanted him under former Norths coach Simon Cron where he was blessed with the service being given on the counter-attack via his excellent running when looking for space & the way he beats defenders which is the same when being tested defensively. Yes, so unlucky when their reserve hooker just couldn’t nail it down at the in-zone but poor ball retention every time Norths lost/gave the ball away is what really consigned them to another Shute Shield runner-up finish of 2024.

Wow!! What a game we have witnessed at Allianz Stadium where one team in the Reds got away with a really good start going into half-time 19-0. Then another team in the form of the underwhelming Waratahs began to pick up plenty of unanswered points where they were oh so close, having closed in at 24-24 all before successful two point conversion puts them in front at 26-24 for a short time. However, a late penalty goal from halfway by Tom Lynagh for the Reds fortunately gave their away fans a huge sigh of relief with the one point win in Moore Park by 26-27. Reds clearly booked in 5th where they will most likely take on the Chiefs once again in Hamilton next weekend while the Waratahs ended up last following a very difficult 2024 season.

Fraser McReight once again outstanding that puts the Reds on the map for a couple of winning occasions throughout the year on the openside 7. Not only he’s so dangerous smashing the opposition while backing up with the backline via his pace and superior passing but also brilliant to break down defensively too including the latter stages needed to stop the Waratahs from slipping away come full-time. There’s unfinished business ahead in the hope he can be the best 7 for both club and country going forward & next weekend’s last eight v the Chiefs away in Hamilton is the perfect time to do it & play semi-finals.

Josh Flook is another important Reds player who we should keep an eye on after an excellent display last night in the midfield outside 13. He’s the man that never stops running & also loves to score tries off the back of a great first half performance with one TRY to himself thanks to some excellent communication in the attacking third. Yes, we could’ve seen him score his 2nd when things didn’t go their way while seeing the Waratahs 2nd half comeback that almost came back to bite his team. But he was happy to accept the win & Josh needs his full support, so he can unleash his attacking abilities in the hope of going one better by beating the Chiefs again next weekend.

Finally, Jack Bowen has been exceptional when being given the keys to start in the Waratahs 10 position, particularly when he played a key role in his team’s resurgence after half-time of one TRY & three successful conversion kicks. Okay, he might have missed the very last penalty kick which was so unlucky. But Jack knows where to hack it when looking to expand into the wide areas on the counter attack with the numbers he’s got around him and voila! Let’s hope he will benefit from good competition that will make him a better player under a new coach going into next season. For now, he will look to help his 4th placed Easts side have a solid run in the Shute Shield show soon enough.

And shoutout with thanks to Darren Coleman on getting the Waratahs get back on track such as back to back 6th places including two Crusaders wins this year as if it’s 2014 again but sadly injuries hit him the most & we wish him good luck.

The Norths are celebrating with full-back Max Burey in the dressing room right now after he delivered the game-winning drop goal that saw his side lift the Minor Premiership. He may not have the tall reach but has lots of physicality where he shares a similar build with current Waratah Will Harrison. His pace created nightmares for the Easts when running through their territory while possessing excellent kicking power; mainly when clearing out of trouble but he too can find both the touch line & goal posts as well, like he did within a few mins to go in the 2nd half. He hopes that his World Sevens tour with Australia earlier this year plus his past Rugby League expertise will help the Norths go all the way in the Finals beginning next Saturday v Manly Marlins.

The next Norths stand out player belongs to James Turner on the right wing backline at No.14. He‘s so quick through the channels when supporting the attack & is an amazing finisher as well, especially when Brad Hemopo assisted him via a quick offload & Turner pulled comfortably like a Track & Field sprinter with the Norths opening TRY on the far right short side. His tall reach & teamwork got the best of him defensively via an excellent read before locking the Easts up that helped his Norths side win scrums/penalties/turnovers. James has unfinished business at age 23 where a good Shute Shield finals performance, as well as potentially delivering his side a title, would hopefully see him back in the Waratahs picture next season at Super Rugby level.

And Jack Bowen made an instant impact off the bench for Easts when they were nine points down at one point in the 2nd half. His partnership with half-back Teddy Wilson was behind one of their team’s turning points that got them back into contention, especially when he added the extra conversion points. He & Teddy would be perfect in cricket as if they both took over the top-order batting collapse & form a big stand at the same North Sydney Oval. It boosted some confidence when Easts scored two more tries before they led for the first time with 15 mins to go. Sadly, Easts just couldn’t hold off until the very end when slow starts through both halves came back to bite them, and it would’ve been different if he played the full 80.
