Margaret Court Arena

Also an hour or two ago this afternoon over at Margaret Court Arena, we witnessed another five set stunner between 14th seed American Tommy Paul & Miomir Kecmanović from Serbia. The Serbian got a close opening set lead while Tommy Paul went from a set down to being closer towards the finish line after the third set at 2-1. However, Kecmanovic never gave up when not only he won another set back at the tiebreak but he managed to finish the match by punching his ticket into the last 16 so fast at the 5th & final set decider. The final score was 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 with 7-9 tiebreaker & 0-6.

Bugger for Tommy Paul with the 3rd round exit after his huge breakthrough here 12 months ago where he lost to Novak Djokovic but what an effort thought to fight back nonetheless. He was so close earlier on and he knew what he had to do to rebound before Paul took over top spot over his opponent for the first time. Sadly, he just couldn’t find his way back after he lost both the 4th tie, being blown away fast at final set & the match itself. Paul hasn’t kicked on for most of last year, even though he did okay through to the 4th round on home soil at the US Open. Plus, hats off to Kecmanovic who put in an absolute show where he’s now off to the fourth round for the first time in his grand slam career. Although, he will be tested against one of the world’s best right now in Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. It will be interesting to see if his courageous resistance in long spells would be the key towards an outside chance of a win. But for now, he will need to work on his inconsistency where he struggled midway through the afternoon until he managed to regroup himself during the fourth set before he sprinted his way past Paul again & there goes his huge day on-court. He has gone through a tough 2023 after not being able to advance after the 1R & the Serbian is sure to win back more this year despite a difficult next round match-up.

World No.4 Italian Jannik Sinner is on a roll this afternoon at Margaret Court Arena following a straight sets win v Sebastian Baez from Argentina. He was too good in the opening two sets & although Baez finally got the ball rolling on time that late in such a huge task to try & hang in there, but Sinner took his time well to bring it home with the win 6-0, 6-1 & 6-3. The Davis Cup team winning player for Team Italy will now face either Tomáš Macháč (Czech Republic) or Karen Khachanov (Russia) for the fourth round this Sunday.

It’s been a great run where this is the second time that Baez has played in the third round after the 2023 US Open but his time was over so fast against such a tremendous player. Like how he fought back in the third set with some good shots to slow Sinner down. But then he was so behind unfortunately for most of the time as there’s nothing he can do about it other than looking to move on next time. He’s ranked 26th right now at age 23 who might not be the tallest but has great ability to unpack things along the way where a great ATP Tour season would see him challenge beyond the third round. And yes, what a player he is from Sinner who is enjoying the Tennis of his life at the moment. He was simply too good over the first two sets over an opponent being so much shorter than him before he took his time a bit longer well against an alert & ready Baez in the third set with a great way to wrap it up in just under two hours of play. Aside from the 2023 Davis Cup team win for Italy, he only made the semi-final last year at Wimbledon but only made the last 8 at Melbourne Park once back in 2022. So he has plenty to prove as his Davis Cup heroics can help springboard his way into something special & win a grand slam from there – same goes to our Aussie own Alex De Minaur who also did well in the Davis Cup and he’s currently ranked World No.10.

Oh so close but Norwegian Casper Ruud has just won the match as Max Purcell left the men’s singles draw with so much applause from the crowd at Margaret Court Arena. He too has put up such a top notch effort right through the very end before things just didn’t end up his way after four hours of play this afternoon. The final score was 3-6, 7-6 with 7-5 tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3 & 6-7 with 7-10 tiebreaker.

He’s got the fight Purcell needs to keep it up with such a Top 15 seeded player in Ruud, which wasn’t easy. But He bounced back really well as seen during the 2nd set tiebreak and the 4th set to give himself a lifeline ahead of the 5th & final decider. He looks like he was almost there to bring home an upset against someone he has known from his junior competition days, but just couldn’t quite escape right of time at the finish line there with the loss. It’s his best performance yet in the 2R at this grand slam alongside the Roland Garros in Paris last year as he is 25 right now with the room to improve throughout this year.

Meanwhile, what a player he is from Ruud who proved to be the better challenger after being established at other slams grams over the last few years. Although he has yet to advance past the 4th Round so far here back in 2021, but this is his greatest day today ahead of his next match-up against Briton Cameron Norrie who also got away from his own five set escape v Giulio Zeppieri from Italy. He fired off well with a great start to bring an early lead. Now he might have struggled to keep up the consistency as exposed by Purcell at times, but he managed to stay ahead by regrouping himself towards the end with patience for the win. He has some unfinished business left though with back-to-back 2nd round results off the back end of last year at Wimbledon & the US Open respectively.

And here’s another brilliant game to start the Day 1 of the 2024 Australian Open between 9th seed Barbora Krejcikova from Czech Republic & Japan’s Mai Hontama at Margaret Court Arena. Hontama fired off really well with an easy opening set lead by surprise before Krejcikova turned herself around when not only she won the 2nd set but made good use of medical time out break in the decider en route towards a two-set victory in the end there after two & 1/2 hours – 6-2, 6-4 & 6-3.

Oh so close from Hontama where it’s not been easy facing a Top 10 seeded player like Krejcikova & she has done great under pressure to stay ahead, having got away with the early lead after the opening set’s play. She just couldn’t find the finish line unfortunately off the back from the Czech’s fight back that went on & on until Hontama was eliminated early from the tournament. Let’s hope she can kick on throughout the year as this is her first grand slam here other than Wimbledon whose best finish there was 2R in 2022. Looking at Krejcikova now & what a comeback from 1-0 down as well as on the brink of being unexpected kicked out to an opening set win under pressure v Hontama. She would be disappointed regarding the opening set performance to begin with but the Czech has shown lots of fightback that shows her credibility on the court as an established grand slam player in both singles and doubles formats, having won the French Open a few years ago back in 2021. Krejcikova has plenty of catch up to do in a bid to get back in the Finals picture since the 2022 Quarter-Finals here ahead of her next round opponent v Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch after she too got away with a brilliant comeback herself, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

We’ve just seen one fantastic Round 4 match from the Rafa Nadal v Adrian Mannarino tie to another, as Denis Shapovalov has just eliminated the 3rd seed from Germany Alexander Zverev at Margaret Court Arena. It’s an easier run this time having overcome a couple of long grueling spells in the opening three rounds beforehand, and the Canadian managed to wrap this up in straight sets (3-6, 6-7 via 5-7 tiebreaker & 3-6) where he will now face Rafa Nadal on Tuesday in which will be an interesting take here.

Zverev’s 2022 campaign in Melbourne has came to an end after Round 4, he did his best to stay in the game during the 2nd set via tiebreaker from the opening set down but unable to unpack most of the fire and executions for the majority where Shapovalov noticed his weaknesses, built a decent lead as this tie goes on & couldn’t hold him off following the 2nd set.

And Shapovalov once again unbeaten so far after the first week of the 2022 Australian Open, he credits his ability to play during these long spells which played a part of his upset against the 3rd seed today. Seeing the 14th seed Canadian build such an early lead + escape a 2nd set tiebreak before getting the job done in straight sets is incredible, these types of skillsets will throw Nadal on the pressure cooker & see if this will shock his next opponent towards the semis in two days.

Denis Shapovalov crossed the finish line 1st ahead of American Reilly Opelka in Round 3 of the 2022 Australian Open at Margaret Court Arena, he fired off well through a close 1st set battle through the tiebreaker before the Canadian was tied 1-1 after the break.

However, Shapovalov later re-grouped himself during the 2nd half run with an improved momentum that was enough to show himself the win in three sets out of four, his opponent for Round 4 on will either be 3rd seed from Germany Alexander Zverev or Qualifier Radu Albot.

Final Score: 6-7 via 4-7 tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6

Looks like he didn’t have any trouble playing for long periods so far from Shapovalov having gone past Serbia’s Laslo Dere in Round 1 & Kwon Soon-Woo during Round 2, Shapovalov is always on top of his game even though he narrowly lost the 2nd set spell as this is all about the overall result where the Canadian managed to get the job done with little to no fuss.

And Opelka never gave up when he fought a series of close battles against Shapovalov after the American tied 1-1 going into the 3rd set, however, the lack of executions/conversions when trying to bridge from his 1st half run saw Opelka being left further behind before Shapovalov confirmed his elimination as soon as this Round 3 tie was done just over the three-hour mark.

Another decent match-up we’ve just seen on the 4th Day of the 2022 Australian Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas went from the opening set down to the next three sets nailed down against Argentine Sebastian Baez at Margaret Court Arena, he will wait for either Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria or Frenchman Benoit Paire as his next opponent for Round 3.

Final Score: 6-7 via 1-7 tiebreaker, 7-6 via 7-5 tiebreaker, 3-6, 4-6

Unlucky from Baez with the loss where he fired off well with the narrow 1st set lead via the tiebreaker, although he never gave up continuing that fight having won some games back along the way but just couldn’t hold back an elite opponent from the Top 5 like Tsitsipas in the end. He will leave Melbourne Park with room for improvement whenever Baez plats next time, but at least he just pocketed over $100,000 prize money after his 1st career Grand Slam win from the previous round v Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

And how good is Tsitsipas, who terrifically completed this match-up, as he came out from the 1st set loss & tied Baez 1-1 through another tiebreak through the wire before the Greek managed to renew his momentum through the 2nd half run in Sets 3 & 4 that became his turning point towards the homestretch.

Wow! It’s been so long for this 2nd round match-up to settle, but it’s Denis Shapovalov, who rescued himself from the 2nd & 3rd set loss against Korean Kwon Soon-woo, and worked his way back to the top spot where he held on until the end with the win at Margaret Court Arena. He will now advance to Round 3 of 2022 Australian Open and face American Reilly Opelka on Friday.

Final Score: 6-7 via 6-8 tiebreaker, 7-6 via 7-3 tiebreaker, 7-6 via 8-6 tiebreaker, 5-7 & 2-6.

Shapovalov off to a great 1st set even though it wasn’t easy to come up against a decent opponent like Soon-woo, now he kinda felt gutted at times when the Canadian was narrowly fallen short twice which almost put him at risk of elimination. However, he made up lost time that led to a 5th and final set decider before Shapovalov had an easy run towards the homestretch and won after a grueling over four-hour task on the tennis court.

And Soon-woo also fought hard for the majority with Shapovalov having gone from the opening set down to a 2nd & 3rd set win which puts him one set away towards pulling an upset, but the Korean just couldn’t find the finishing touches with the inconsistency when a poor start plus not making his opponent harder to catch up by closing the gap between a lead and victory ultimately saw him being crashed out that quick during the final set decider.

He’ll be sure to learn that experience Soon-woo battled throughout the four-hour tie with Shapovalov and bounce back stronger next time, his best result was the Round 3 last year in the French Open so maybe that could inspire him to break even better records through Round 4 & even the Final 8.

And great to see Emma Raducanu open her 2022 Australian Open journey with the opening round win against American Sloane Stephens at Margaret Court Arena (0-6, 6-2, 1-6) as she will now meet Danka Kovinic from Montenegro in Round 2 tomorrow.

The reigning US Open champion is back on form after her heavy defeat last week in the Sydney warm-up tournament v Elena Ryabakina, she was too good at the start and although her 2nd set run may be need some fine tuning where Stephens tied 1-1 but she wrapped this up quick and easy in the end that can go all the way on potentially winning another Grand Slam here.

And Stephens gutted to be out of the running this early where she kept herself in contention thanks to a brilliant response in the 2nd set, but she was ultimately outclassed by Emma Raducanu & just couldn’t keep up to her standards with such heavy losses in the 1st and 3rd sets for the majority.

How good was Alex De Minaur last night when he went from the opening set down to a terrific all-round performance ever since at Margaret Court Arena, he had some tough moments against Lorenzo Musetti but De Minaur found it easy as the game went on where he found the finish line first.

Meanwhile, Musetti would be disappointed not to kick on having responded beautifully with the opening set win. However, these poor starts he struggled to keep up with De Minaur was his main weakness and that’s where he was exposed with plenty of valuable lost games followed by the eventual elimination.

Final Score: 6-3, 3-6, 0-6, 3-6

De Minaur’s next opponent for Round 2 tomorrow will be Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak.
