Okay, there’s no way everyone from the powers at Renault/Alpine can be swayed to change their minds, having recently decided to be a customer team one month ago that will take effect from 2026. 

Yes, no engine switch announcement just yet but they’re still widely expected to use Mercedes engines.

It’s a shame after Renault made their own Formula 1 engines for nearly 50 years but no secret though that their recent engine that dates back from the hybrid era from 10 years ago hasn’t reaped any championships at all – not even a few odd wins here & there was enough to justify their latest failures when comparing to Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and even Honda.

If there’s one thing Alpine could’ve saved that engine for sure and that’s when if they’d rather stop making their own chassis by luring Dallara over to prise that big chassis contract away from Haas. 

That way, Dallara would help them out with the chassis & in turn Alpine still gets to keep making engine whose 2026 version will unfortunately go unused & be put into waste behind closed doors.

What does it mean for Haas since they’re now technically tied-up with Toyota? They can always find another chassis builder to replace Dallara or get Toyota to do it while Haas can still use Ferrari engines.

There’s 1-2 already out there in the form of a Formula 2 and Formula 3 car where Dallara manages the chassis and engineering side of things while the engine is still at the heart of Mecachrome – a French engineering company who has close ties with Renault/Alpine. 

Imagine if there’s a carbon copy of this Dallara/Mecachrome F2 car being made into F1 together but used only for Alpine? 

Maybe at least that would help them improve in some way to be a decent midfield team at best if not running Top 3 in the long-run to meet their so-called 100-race plan.

Also, it would be easy enough for someone – who is so well used to driving this Formula 2 car – would go on to have an easy transition into Alpine’s F1 team if hired, with this Dallara made Formula 1 car alongside Renault’s engine in it.

Australia’s own Jack Doohan (son of 5 x 500cc world champion Mick Doohan) is a great example who had some success with the Dallara F2 car over the last 1-2 years, even though he may never have won a championship so far in his career. 

He is set to be promoted to Alpine F1’s squad ahead of their final season as a works partner for Renault next season alongside Pierre Gasly on a one-year deal, so not a lot of time. But if he impresses and gets to stick around for a second year, then surely he’d thrive big time.

If the powers at Renault see this, hope this would be worth considering if they can keep the engine but let someone else handle the chassis side of things at the hands of Dallara like they always do together in Formula 2 & 3. But in the real world, they’ll just move on as Renault might start making Formula 1 engines again if these next PU rules make sense.

Last week, Alpine officially signed our Aussie Jack Doohan as a full-time driver to the replace the Haas-bound Esteban Ocon next season alongside Frenchman Pierre Gasly. But we still don’t know what’s going to happen beyond 2025 when the new engine regulations come in and Renault – who manages Alpine – still wishes to abandon their engine project to cut costs, so they can use Mercedes as one of their privateer teams rather than continue being a fully fledged factory team.

If they really wanted to be a customer team, it’s going to be weird when a big car company like Renault via Alpine makes their own sports cars on the road but not for Formula 1 as if they’re running Lotus or Aston Martin. 

I don’t recall a single thing about Alpine working with Mercedes on a road car project before. Although they’ve did work with Caterham and Lotus for a brief time before, but then neither of those joint venture projects came out because there’s less competition to produce and get back in this small sports car market.

What Renault should’ve done is to just sell off Alpine to Andretti if they didn’t really want to run a team that isn’t their own engine. However, we still don’t know when they will finally admit that they can no longer run a Formula 1 team should they become a customer team to Mercedes.

As it stands for now, they are not keen on selling even it’s for a billion dollars when Formula 1 currently enjoys running 10 teams to maximise & protect its financial value rather than thinking anything expansion to let Andretti-GM in.

All we can hope for Renault is to get a supportive OEM partner to help finish off the project like IImor or Mecachrome in the hope of closing their rivals upfront by competing for regular podiums and victories again. If not, they can finish this off by themselves in-house if they really want to for the best of Renault given their long history of racing in Formula One.

That will be a huge ask though as hoping Alpine doesn’t succumb to its complete collapse at some point and Jack would then have to find another ride or at least admit they can’t compete in Formula 1 anymore, and a new team like Andretti or Hitech can come take over Team Enstone where this place was the home to many World Championships back in the 90s and early-mid 00s.

Oh so close but what a way to bring up a P2 finish that follows up from his career first podium finish of 3rd during the previous round in Japan two weeks ago by Oscar Piastri for #4 McLaren-Mercedes.

He has definitely benefited the opening lap Mercedes’ team-mates crash of Lewis Hamilton & George Russell that saw Lewis had to retire early where Oscar gained a few spots from his starting place of 6th to 2nd. Although he wasn’t able to stop the now 3 x World Champion Max Verstappen who continues to dominate the whole field by a comfortable 4 second gap, but it’s still an unreal weekend though to reflect in the end with another podium finish.

From a supposed 3rd in qualifying being wiped out by race control to winning all of the sprint formats & to now posting his best result of 2nd – hats off to Oscar on an excellent drive with credit of a front row race car being prepared by McLaren.

There’s only five races left with the United States Grand Prix next up in two weeks time at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas. Let’s hope Oscar can follow up a podium finish again but this time he wins a full Grand Prix for the first time.

The last time a McLaren driver won a race was fellow Aussie Daniel Ricciardo from the 2021 Italian Grand Prix. So hope the next McLaren winner will be an Aussie again but with Piastri being on top of the podium as we’re going to see a brilliant finish to his rookie year in the hope of being ready to challenge Max next year.

Wow!! What a day it has been from Australia’s own Oscar Piastri who dominated both the Sprint qualifying shootout & the 19-lap race itself for McLaren-Mercedes at the Qatar Grand Prix in Lusail. He had a great opening few laps & although he lost a spot to George Russell (Mercedes) for a while, but Oscar managed to regain top spot off Russell & stayed there comfortably this time through the end with the win. 

How good was that to see Oscar record his next best moment in Formula 1 as a full race win will come his way sooner rather than later hopefully to wrap it up tomorrow at 4 AM AEDT time. We thought he will be starting 3rd, but will start 6th instead because his final lap time was invalid due to exceeding track limits which was also applied to his team-mate Lando Norris.

Regardless of that, he will hope to make the most of his starting position through a decent race car by challenging up front against the Mercedes & Red Bull cars including now 3 x World Champion Max Verstappen from the Netherlands.

There’s a little more to it a few days ago about the possibility of Liam Lawson racing on loan at Williams-Mercedes from Red Bull next season alongside fellow past Red Bull & Toro Rosso alumni Alex Albon from Thailand.

Last weekend, it was announced that Daniel Ricciardo will be back at Alpha Tauri while they hold on Yuki Tsunoda for another year due to the Honda links they bring into RB’s feeder squad when it comes to the engines + funding. It seems that won’t go away until at least the end of 2025 where Liam should be racing F1s by then in place Ricciardo before RBR & AT will switch to Ford engines from 2026, so that Yuki may join Aston Martin since they will be the next Honda’s works outfit. 

It would’ve been great to see Liam get a full season experience at Williams beforehand next season where he can be a perfect replacement for the under-fire Sergio Perez as Max Verstappen’s next team-mate at the flagship organization in 2025. But then that door is also closed when Williams wanted to retain American Logan Sargeant despite him crashing all the time.

Even though Sargeant may not be back & Liam missing out, Williams would elect to have last year’s Formula 2 champion Felipe Drugovich from Brazil instead in his place. All can Liam do now is learn from both Red Bull teams, then step up to Alpha Tauri in 2025 and go from there to achieve something big so he can go on & race for the main team in 2-3 years time. It’s the same for Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris who had to sit a year out before earning their first moves onto the big time. Let’s hope more Kiwis can follow his lead when it comes to earning their stripes from the ground up to all the way at the top level.

Yes, today’s Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix race was crazy earlier on where we saw a few cars make contact into each other that led to some DNFs along the way. But it was a great day though with Max Verstappen being unstoppable in the Red Bull-RBPT Honda before he was joined by both McLarens to round out the Top 3 as Lando Norris finished 2nd followed our Aussie own Oscar Piastri, who scored his first podium finish in 3rd. We wished Oscar would’ve chased down Max from 2nd, but then he was blocked by the race winner immediately after the race start where Lando took a great view on the outside from 3rd to 2nd before he couldn’t get on hold onto Max as the race progresses. There will always be another Oscar moment after his mother couldn’t be there to watch her son race in-person today, but it looks like we will see him win races & hopefully a World Championship someday thanks to his latest four-year contract extension a few days ago with McLaren.

And shoutout to New Zealand’s Liam Lawson down in 11th for the Alpha Tauri-RBPT Honda outfit. He had a great battle with his team-mate Yuki Tsunoda from the start, although he was losing some track position for a while. But he had a great last half run though nonetheless, having made up some lost time where he got around Yuki before being way ahead of him en route towards another good result – despite being a lap down in his 4th race. Again, this is one driver who deserves a full-time seat. But there’s nothing we can do about it unless Williams can loan him out (which is unlikely) following the news yesterday that Alpha Tauri will retain both Yuki and the injured Daniel Ricciardo next season. Next stop, Lusail International Circuit in Race 17/23 this season under the lights for Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday 8th October/Monday 9th October at 4am AEDT here.
