Update as of Day 5: Game is drawn now thanks to yet another rain delay that left little opportunity for the Aussies to close out the match. Yes, they might have finally bowled India all out for 260 before they fell off so quickly when they’ve batted the 2nd time & declared right on the spot after the Aussies had enough; but then the rain came to say it’s too late. Hence, the series remains tied at 1-1 apiece Test with two more left to play for going into Thursday next week for the annual Boxing Day Test showdown at the MCG in Melbourne.

What does the Aussies have to do to keep themselves focused on the right track & not let India take way the series trophy that they haven’t had for a long time?

I know Josh Hazlewood has been the glue of that “Fast Bowling Cartel” cohort over the past decade alongside Mitchell Starc & Pat Cummins but better still, should’ve kept Scott Boland and hold Hazlewood back at the next right time like the New Year’s Sydney Test instead of rushing back to like now. Unfortunately, that didn’t go well when he suffered a calf strain while warming up first thing yesterday as he won’t be back for a while – don’t know when but not for the rest of this series.

With the batting, not bad considering how good we were other than the sugar rushed Day 5 spell they had to put in ahead of the declaration. Although Travis Head wasn’t feeling good earlier today due to a tight quad issue on his thigh, let’s hope it won’t be too serious since he has been the saviour to our batting card. But not much of a chance now for Nathan McSweeney to nail down his spot as Test Opener at least for now unless he goes back to Shield level with South Australia & scores consistently big over the next 12 months if he continues to get sent back for peanuts.

There’s a few others waiting in-line to make their first steps with the Baggy Green like the 19-year-old sensation Sam Konstas from NSW & St George (Hurstville) in Sydney Premier Cricket – we will find this out towards the end of 2024 for sure before it’s stay or go time for McSweeney who does in fact hail from Queensland.

For now, still long way to with still lots to play for as anything can happen in this Border-Gavaskar Trophy. And shoutout to Ravi Ashwin by the way on his decorated International career following his retirement post-game as he won’t be taking any further part from now, even though there’s still a bit of play left in this series. It won’t be the same without him from someone who has been India’s primary spinner for a long time as we wish him the best of luck.

Off the back of a successful Day 2 spell from the bat by the Aussies including Alex Carey’s stunning 70-run smash as their primary keeper (and also last man out prior to the change of innings), they weren’t bad yesterday on the field & the red kookaburra ball with early wickets when India had the chance to reply at the crease – despite elements of yesterday’s play being held up by that continuous Brisbane rainy weather at The Gabba.

They walked into Day 4 earlier today knowing the Aussies still had a job to do which they did for the most part but not up to their full potential unfortunately, even though they’re only had one wicket to try and force India to follow on before it was too late. Not even the sad injury news by Josh Hazlewood during the warm-up session delivered a crushing blow and he won’t be back for quite a while now due to his calf strain that he pulled up there.

Instead, we saw some amazing moments by the Men In Blue like KL Rahul’s 82, Ravi Jadeja’s 77 when he paused a bit to celebrate with the sword like he always do every time he reaches 50, and the very lower-order partnership between Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep – whom both of them scored really quickly to get past these tired bowlers over at No.‘s 10 and 11.

The good is though that the Aussies can finish this little job for yet another try first thing tomorrow morning at Day 5. But then the race is on over the next final 6-7 hours in order to bat again for a bit if they can pile up the runs quick smart and then declare right on the spot to try and win the unlikeliest of chances of going 2-1 up in this five-test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series ahead of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG (Melbourne) next week.

But right now amid a series of rain delays over the last few days, looks like we will see out a draw for this one – unless Australia plays it smart as said above (an outside chance) or India bowls them out quickly once again before looking to bat big & bring it home (extremely unlikely).

Better still, this is the contest and standard we love watching from both sides when it comes to the long-running Test Cricket format at the end of the day.

We thought the Aussies were doomed right from the start this morning like it was so far in this five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series when our Top 3 batters have already been kicked out that early when we didn’t see much of Day 1 yesterday due to heavy rain. Well, fair enough to India who always keep on winning tosses; although they decided to go things so differently by bowling/fielding first rather than the bat. But hey, so we’re grateful for Travis Head who saved our day once again with another 100 off the back of his hometown heroics when he tamed the pink ball last weekend (2nd Test) at Adelaide Oval.

Then he was joined by Steve Smith not long later having not made a big knock in a long while & he’s done just that to silence the critics who thought he is done at Test level but not just yet. Now that is courageous stuff from the Aussies as they’re currently on 405-7 with keeper Alex Carey (geez he’s been scoring oh so quick!!) currently on 45 alongside fast bowler Mitchell Starc at the tail end on seven & sure he can add the runs a bit like before.

Whatever happens towards the end of their first batting shift, let’s hope they can bowl India as early and quickly as they can in the hope of setting up a 2-1 series lead ahead of the Boxing Day test at the MCG in Melbourne come December 26.

Yes, like to give a shoutout to Jasprit Bumrah also over in the Indian dressing room with his five-wicket haul. But still, it’s been a turbulent day on the field with the seamers taking up the heavy work despite their good start. Don’t know what went wrong there when India were so good in the first test a few weeks ago at Perth and now they seem to have lost it. Not even some  selection changes have helped either as they better be ready to score at least 300-400 tomorrow once the change of innings have been made for Day 3 of 5.

For now, there’s a bit more cricket other than Tests with the T20 Big Bash League actually starting right now to kick off the new six-week season – perfect time to go out once the long school holidays are in during the summer. The opening game will be five-time champions Perth Scorchers who just welcomed the visiting Melbourne Stars side at Optus Stadium.

Australia vs Ireland was played on 31 October 2022, at the Stadium Brisbane, Australia. Australia was captained by Aaron Finch, and Ireland was captained by Andrew Balbirnie.

Before the start of the match, the toss was held between the two teams and Ireland won the toss and decided to field. It is very important to win this match for both teams to maintain their reputation till the semi-finals. David Warner and Aaron Finch came to play first for Australia while Joshua little bowled the first ball for Ireland.

Australia

In the first over, the Australian batsmen scored 6 runs and the second over of the match was played by Mark Adair in which Australia scored 8 runs without any loss. B. McCarthy bowled in the third over for the Ireland team and got the win for his team by dismissing David Warner on the first ball.

Australia scored 14 runs in 3 overs for the loss of one wicket. At the end of 3 overs, the predictor predicted 171 runs for the Australian team. And thus, in the ongoing match against Ireland, Australia scored 34 runs for the loss of one wicket in 5 overs.

B. McCarthy dismissed Marsh on the first ball of his second over to give his team the second wicket. Joshua little got the third wicket by dismissing Glenn Maxwell and Australia scored 84 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 11 overs.

The Australian team scored 179 runs against Ireland in 20 overs for the loss of 5 wickets, in which Aussie captain Aaron Finch scored 63 runs off 44 balls and Marcus Stoinis scored 35 runs off 25 balls for his team. And 20 overs Ireland needs 180 runs to win.

Ireland

Shortly after the end of Australia’s batting, Ireland’s players entered the field, which were P. Stirling and A. Balbirnie. But A. Balbirnie could not play well for his team and got out for 18 runs but after some time P. Stirling also got out for 18 runs in 2.2 overs. After that, the responsibility of the team L.Tucker and H. Tector took over. But H. Tector could not stay in the field for long and got out after scoring 6 runs.

After the departure of H. Tector, C. Campher and G. Dockrell came and they too could not play a good role for their team and got out without taking any runs.

After five of Ireland’s players were dismissed, G. Delaney came in at number seven, scoring fourteen runs off ten balls.

As the match wore on, the competition became tougher for Ireland. On the other hand, the Australian bowlers tried to get Ireland out early and thus the Ireland team scored 136 runs for the loss of eight wickets in seventeen overs. Ireland needed 44 runs off eighteen balls to win.

Ireland had just 18 balls to complete their target. But they could not complete his target in front of the Australian bowler and the whole team was out by scoring 137 runs in 18.1 overs. Ireland suffered a defeat and Australia won by forty-two runs.

Summary

Australia’s Aaron Finch (63/44), Marcus Stoinis (35/25), and Mitchell Marsh (28/22) take turns playing for your team.

Ireland’s Lorcan Tucker (71/48), Gareth Delany (14/10), and Paul Stirling (11/7) take turns playing for your team.

After winning the match against Ireland, the Australian team got 5 points and placed second in its Super 12 group, while Ireland is fourth in its group with 3 points after facing defeat.

Credit to Nathan Lyon who finally ended the partnership of Dawid Malan & Joe Root this morning with his 400th Test wicket on Malan (82) + 4 wicket haul, it’s also great to see Australia’s fielding improve with a few successful catches as well as some support to their frontline bowling options from Cameron Green where he got rid of Root for 89.

It gave time for Australia’s frontline quicks (Pat Cummins & Josh Hazlewood) to get back up to speed & made good use of that 2nd new ball where they cleared the remaining England batting card with Green & Lyon for 299 & a 19 run trail before Australia finished the game easily with winning runs by 9 wickets, well done to the Aussies as they lead the five-match Ashes series 1-0.

England have kept it simple during their 2nd innings resurgence yesterday afternoon with Root & Malan despite the openers still being sub-par after a poor first two days, but they just couldn’t keep that momentum going when they returned this AM with potential hundreds & a bigger run stand stolen by Australia before a small lead wasn’t enough to stay in contention.

What Australia will focus now is continue their strong start going into Adelaide & hope that David Warner recovers in time for Thursday’s next test, England needs to at least revisit their opening options if they are to fight back as these guys like Rory Burns who weren’t up to the challenge while they would greatly benefit from James Anderson’s return & maybe Stuart Broad with the ball.

Hats off to Travis Head who produced a test quality knock of 152 for Australia which a little more than what England scored in the 1st innings (147), although Australia left an acceptable lead of 278 when they were all out for 425 but they haven’t found it much ever since after their strong start off England’s openers especially with the partnership of David Malan & Joe Root that halted their progress.

Meanwhile, Mark Wood did a great finishing up with the ball earlier on Day 3 for England, now these openers (Rory Burns & Haseeb Hameed) were slapped again with respective sub-par scores after lunch but gotta say the top-order partnership of Joe Root & David Malan have rescued their day going into Day 4 where they both batted simply down the ground, hung in there & earned their own 50s off the bat while building a big partnership at the same time.

What Australia has to do is make the most of that new ball tomorrow with flawless fielding by their side after a exhausted 2nd half run today as they still have a 58 run lead at 220-2 if not there’s still another easy way to go 1-0 up in this Ashes series, while England need Root (86*) & Malan (80*) to keep their head up by converting these centuries, climb out of the run trail & stay there for longer that will at least turn into a draw or an outside shot of winning the 1st Test.

That partnership with David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne was one of Australia’s best moments earlier on Day 2, who both remained calm and collective in the middle before they flied plenty of decent shots out of the park that sealed their half-tons.

Warner & Labuschagne may not have converted into a century going into tea when Australia just overtook England for the lead but Travis Head kept them alive in the middle at No.5 when he proved doubters wrong about his inconsistency & earned his way to a nice ton himself which is a wonderful way Australia’s end Day 2 progress in style.

They lead by 196 runs at 343-7 so Australia should stay at the crease for a little longer with Head still out there & Mitchell Starc can bat a handy amount of runs before we bring out their bowling strikeforce & try to finish that 1st Test with a win.

Meanwhile, England took an early advantage off the inexperienced Marcus Harris thanks to Ollie Robinson, who also blocked Warner towards escaping his nervous 90s on 94 before he launched a free run & clean bowled Cameron Green for a duck.

Although England were unlucky to dismiss Warner earlier on through that no ball from Ben Stokes, who just overstepped the line on his front foot but England looked very lost during the 1st half of today while wiping Steve Smith for 12 &  Australia’s middle-order card wasn’t enough to reserve their slump thanks to the last man standing in Travis Head.

What England has to do now is wrap up this bowling spell ASAP in the AM session tomorrow before they can use most of Day 3 through lunch & tea to catch up with the bat, then they can use Day 4 to set Australia a difficult run total to chase but only if one or two of their decent batsmen can survive long enough.

What a day to kickstart their Ashes campaign at The Gabba in Brisbane for the Aussies on Day 1 where they found a way to knock down England’s tail end up early with four wickets (59-4) in the AM session ahead of lunch, then continued that momentum after they bowled them all out for 147.

Nice early tea break for the home side as Pat Cummins bowled beautifully that earned his five-wicket haul alongside Josh Hazlewood who robbed England’s key players with the bat, but the rain has held back for the rest of the afternoon, so Australia will come out to bat tomorrow during the start of Day 2 & use that time to build a big partnership.

England on the other hand gave themselves a lift after lunch thanks to the middle-order partnership of Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler who each made 30+ runs, the damage was already done, however, when the England top-order were exposed by the opposition fast bowling earlier on before it was too late that gave Buttler & Pope a lot of pressure to survive at least after Day 1 which wasn’t successful.

What England can do now is smash the Australian top-order out early & overtake them for the lead but they only have one dedicated fast bowler in Mark Wood and spinner (Jack Leach) plus two fast bowling all-rounders to that job with no Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson.

We’ll wait and see if this England bowling group is going to surprise us tomorrow on Day 2 but if you look at Australia’s decent batting arsenal then Australia continue to build that strong Day 1 momentum with a huge total before they think about finishing that 1st test match on a high.
