Timoci Tavatavanawai

Tupou Vaai’s got power on the Chiefs second row 5 with tries and exceptional ground work while Damian McKenzie at 10 unleashed his need for speed at counter-attacking plays and kicks for goal as well.

Message sent with the three qualifying final games to start next weekend.

Timoci Tavavanawai at 12: a quick thinker, shifter & finisher- not the Highlanders year in 2025 but here to make things count.

Then in Canberra, Crusaders back rowers punched above their weight v Brumbies like starting blindside 6 Ethan Blackadder who did a bit of everything in the first half, and No.8 Christian Lio-Willie pushing and pulling against all stops all game.

Unlucky to Brumbies who didn’t have much ball in the first half when their late bid wasn’t quite enough but Tom Wright from the back always involved that the Crusaders wasn’t able to do on its own.

Chiefs simply unstoppable with their goal-scoring ability that sets the challenge for all over five teams to beat, having collected the regular season honours.

Highlanders, on the other hand, had some great moments that the home fans were proud of for the sake of this last-placed team – lots to look at in the off-season.

Back to Canberra as this Brumbies v Crusaders clash seeks realm like it was last year and many times before. Not saying it was the best of the Australian and New Zealand Super Rugby teams at this time when times have changed.

But still, Crusaders did enough to get over the line off the back of their strong hold forward pack & not so much from the backline, particularly when the loose ones stood out best despite hauling Ethan off.

I guess that’s to protect him who Crusaders need him most next weekend.

Brumbies wished they could have kept Crusaders under water off the back of their restarts that follows up with dominating the last 40 – just needs to work on their consistency and we might as well see the much better version this year.

Now the tables have turned to final round Saturday with three teams still in the hunt for the 6th and final spot:

  • Moana Pasifika
  • Blues
  • NSW Waratahs

This afternoon Tahs will be in Auckland v Blues then at 5pm AEST Moana Pasifika will look to make their first finals appearance in Wellington v Hurricanes.

It’s either Tahs win and Moana lose or Blues win and Moana lose or Moana win either way as long as it’s the win v Canes.

What a game it was to open Super Rugby Round 15 of 16 on Friday night across both sides of the Tasman including one Australian side taking part of course.

But still, Crusaders lucky to walk away unscathed v Highlanders (15-12) while Hurricanes locked out the threatening Reds in silence away from home (27-31).

Also, there was a women’s Pacific 4 International match with the Wallaroos this time hosting Canada prior to the Reds v Hurricanes curtain raiser. Unfortunately, that didn’t go too well with Canada being oh too good and the final score was 7-44.

With the Highlanders now lost 10 out of 13 in Season 2025, safe to say their chances to reach Top 6 definitely out of reach. They’ve got the Chiefs next Friday which will be extremely difficult even if an unexpected win would put the season early to bed.

Crusaders also return on top of the table as a result of their win along with the Hurricanes just leapfrogged Reds for 4th that will no doubt shift their full attention towards Finals Footy.

Now the race continues tomorrow on Super Saturday where Moana Pasifika will want to solidify their Top 6 extended chance v Chiefs and so does Waratahs but only if they can beat Western Force that could give them one last golden shot v the Blues.

Top 3 players from both Crusaders v Highlanders and Reds v Hurricanes

Just can’t get enough of the Crusaders tough No.3 tight prop Tamaiti Williams off the back of his tries and tough tackling; same with team-mate Tom Christie on the open 7 who always contributes at every turn like he did last week v Waratahs – they finished well physically like no other.

Then there’s Timoci Tavatavanawai making a huge effort on the inside Highlanders 12 where they had their own moments but shame their “kick to comes” weren’t good – oh, they were also hesitant & being a touch isolated in return.

Meanwhile in Brisbane, outside Hurricanes 13 Billy Proctor beautifully executed his ball carries so he knows they can score tries including for himself – and look out, Fehi Fineanganofo stirs up a surprise with his tricky pace and finishing on the left 11.

At last, Harry Wilson is back as the Reds first-choice 8 where he’s got the build-up base and leadership to funnel into tries especially on the expansive (2nd half) – unlucky though with missing bits and pieces being filled in by the Hurricanes.

It’s been a game of two halves once again tonight by the Western Force at home at HBF Park and the visiting Highlanders from Otago where Highlanders know how to get the ball rolling but one too many mistakes here and there saw the Force reaped the rewards and they’ve made a huge statement with the 29-20 win in the end.

Looking at elsewhere, okay, the results may not have gone our way with the Reds and Waratahs both lost out to Chiefs and Moana Pasifika respectively over in NZ.

But still, we have four Aussie Super Rugby teams inside the Top 6 which is great for us rugby fans and also for the competition itself. Although there’s still a long way to go where things can change everything with another eight to go before the regular season becomes Finals Footy, especially with the Crusaders (2nd) are currently back to their former glory who were also too good for Fijian Drua (11th) earlier today while Blues hold out Hurricanes by 19-18.

Message sent to the British & Irish Lions

For now, happy to see some much needed quality being injected across our four Australian Super Rugby teams, as hopefully this can help us field at least two teams play in the semis & one fighting for the championship with the Grand Final.

So yes, Jordan King, watch out for our Wallabies by the time they take on the British & Irish Lions this July-August.

He’s the one I’ve spoken to recently about Formula 1 particularly with Jack Doohan and is currently part of his Alpine F1 squad as a development driver, even though he was Franco Colapinto’s driving coach a few years ago & Franco is also the reserve driver there. But all we want from Jack now is to be at his best when it comes to his race form tomorrow and as Jordan said, wait and see with surprises for sure.

No matter what people say, he can bounce back from out of nothing by turning into something as seen with a largely repaired A525 today.

Top 3 players pick

No Dylan Pietsch? No problem. There’s a Sydneysider via the students (Sydney Uni) in George Poolman tearing up the Highlanders like a wrecking ball all afternoon and early evening based on his tremendous finishing abilities with pace  and his talents are there to see thanks to some brilliant team-work in the last third.

Same goes to Force’s main 15 Mac Grealy who knows his street smarts as if he’s the fastest man out there through peak traffic every time they were able to find those sweet spots right in front of their doorstep.

Hats off to Simon Cron whose running rugby is a Western Force they can be reckoned with as they are flying high right now in 4th out of 11th at the halfway mark.

And credit to Timoci Tavatavanawai btw with his mix and match top speed & defensive performances on the Highlanders inside 12 off the back of a brilliant start but it’s a shame they were being erratic in all areas for the most part – you cannot win games like that, period.

Oh what a game it was to start the new Super Rugby campaign of 2025 for the 30th year running with a NSW Waratahs last-minute win by just one point the difference (37-36) at Allianz Stadium v the Highlanders from Otago, New Zealand.

Where do we start, Highlanders got their first scoring touches but poor discipline  saw the Waratahs sneak back in contention ahead of half-time by 13-12.

The game did go down the wire when both teams continue to add more tries & extra kicking points as it goes in the 2nd term.

At the end of the day, the Highlanders’ failure to secure this match under pressure while being punished yet again forced the Waratahs’ hand even though the clock was ticking towards full-time – and the rest everyone says is history.

Super Rugby will go on with three more games to finish off the first round tomorrow with the Waratahs taking next week off ahead of their second home clash v Fijian Drua at the end of this month also on Friday Night & Highlanders go back home in Dunedin next Saturday night v the reigning champions Blues.

Happening elsewhere

And shoutout to Wallabies and Reds veteran James O’Connor by the way whose new side Crusaders got away with a season-opening win over last year’s semi-finalists in the Hurricanes by 33-25 – the best part about him was that he came off the bench to help them win from behind.

I mean, how good was that in front of home supporters in Christchurch if you’re a Crusaders fan as still long way to go towards being at their very best again when it comes to competing in Finals & also winning championships.

If that shoutout wasn’t enough, the same goes to Wallabies and Waratahs legendary full-back Matt Burke who just joined Nine and Stan Sport, having spent the last decade reading the sports news for 10 News First’s Sydney bulletin led by Sandra Sully – and he has also provided his expertise when 10 previously had the rights to air Wallabies matches back in 2013-2020.

IMG 616311

It’s been a huge change of scenery where he may no longer have to read off an autocue on what we need to know from the world of sport every weekday. But hey, at least he knows his stuff pretty well especially when giving back to all things Rugby – as happy to see him turn up on TV some place else albeit in an analyst role at Nine/Stan for their rugby union coverage.

Don’t forget he will also be part of the Monday and Tuesday weekly podcast that is also to do with everything Rugby where he can talk about it all hour long called Between Two Posts thanks to Stan with Sean Maloney and former team-mate Morgan Turinui, so that’s more than good enough to keep you updated every week on the loop.

Plus, even though Joe Schmidt has done an amazing job with the Wallabies last year when Rugby Australia undergone a huge high performance restructure, he is unable to stay through the 2027 World Cup as he needed to take care of his son back in New Zealand – we wish him good luck.

Top 3 players card

Everyone cheering for the Waratahs at Allianz Stadium has been raving about reserve prop Siosifa Amone, who has been a relevation with two second-half tries including that last-minute winning moment, since he came on in for the seasoned Wallaby Taniela Tupou.

He came from a long way at the Western Force in Perth but he’s got all the resources he needs to kick on as a better player with more experience at home.

IMG 608411

Looking at the Tahs, love how they were willing to take risks on the up while cashing in on a number of missed Highlanders opportunities – and good to see Max Jorgensen giving our rugby fans some memorable moments mainly on the wide left 11 like that game -winning TRY late last year v England at Twickenham.

He has tremendous talent by his side at a good young age of only age 20 having ticked off a lot of boxes that the Highlanders couldn’t do from their own end as we see Max being more of a team player now which is things we love to see for the best of Australian rugby.

Last but not least, how good was Timoci Tavatavanawai on the inside Highlanders 12 & he is someone who loves playing at Allianz Stadium. He’s tough as nails every time he plays a pivotal role in attack that gets them moving as well as in defense – lots to come straight from the highlights reel. Yes, so unlucky to lose by just one point but it’s a shame they blew their chances while their reckless hits didn’t help either & that’s that sadly in the end.
